Weird email server problem

I rent space on a web-server from a friend of mine, and for *years* everything has worked fine.

In the last few days, I have not received any email to my main account. I've sent myself emails from other accounts, and sent OUT emails from this account, but for whatever reason, the server does not want to accept new messages. A friend tried to email me and a couple days later got a bounce back email saying:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Unable to deliver message to the following recipients, due to being unable to connect successfully to the destination mail server.

Short of trying to contact the administrator (who I don't actually want to speak to much!) does anyone have any ideas about what might be causing this? Obviously the server is hooped - I am hoping it's temporary and things will "fix themselves" given time...

This is kind of a vague post but I am appealing to those who 'know' mail servers just out of curiosity to see what might cause this sort of thing.... TIA

Sounds like the sending server couldn't even connect to yours, I would speculate either your server isn't responding to connection requests or possibly the DNS MX record for you domain has expire or changed, or the IP address of the server changed.
