Laptop memory - How standard is it?

I want to increase the pathetic 512MB in my Dell Inspiron B120 to 1GB. Is there anything I need to know when it comes to buying memory for a laptop, or do I just pick some that matches the current memory's specs?

You need SODIMM modules for notebooks, specifically 512MB DDR2-533 SODIMM.

    The Kingston version is KTD-INSP6000A/512
    The Corsair version is VS512SDS533D2

Is there a big difference in quality between the two brands? I haven't bought memory in a long time. :P

Those two are the only brands I buy, I didn't list any other brands because I don't trust any other brands.

I'm going to check reviews and such, but Kingston and Corsair are names I've heard quite often being discussed positively. Thanks for the help. :)

Make sure your motherboard can actually handle 1GB of RAM.

His notebook handles up to 2GB, has 2 memory slots, one of which is currently populated with 512MB of RAM.

And now that I know laptop memory is so cheap, I might just fill it up with 2GB.

There is no reason not to.

Necroing my own thread because I still haven't bought the RAM, and have a question. One 1GB module, or two 512MB modules?

One 1GB stick. Your laptop has either 1x512MB or 2x256MB right now. That would leave you with 1.5GB total, or 1.25GB total memory and you can Ebay the other 256GB stick. And if you ever want/need to go to 2GB, you'll only need to buy one additional stick.

The reason I asked is because of memory bandwidth. I'm still fuzzy on RAM, but I know one type runs best when you use two identical modules instead of one big module.
