I'm using a 20" lcd with a 1680x1050 resolution that also supports 1440x900, an 8800gt which i would assume supports 1440x900 and windows vista. Everything has the newest drivers. The problem is 1440x900 doesn't show up in either the windows resolution settings or the nvidia control panel. Is there any way to force the computer to use a resolution thats not displayed? like the xorg.conf file in xwindows?
edit: i've also unchecked hide modes that this monitor cant display, and the resolutions listed now go 1920-1680-1360 still skipping over 1440
You need to enable the advanced view of the nvidia control panel. Goto manage custom resolutions. Create a resolution of 1440x900 with the correct refresh rate (60hz most likely), and 32bpp for the pixel depth. You can try it now by selecting test.
If it doesn't work, enter it again, and change the backend timing from auto to dmt, gtf, or cvt reduced blank. Each one is going to have slightly different timings. I'd stick with the one that has the closest timing to your monitor specification. For my monitor, even though it is an older specification, dmt provides the timing closest to all of the pre defined resolutions.
If any of this makes you nervous, don't do it. It is an advanced function and I take no responsibility for you damaging your panel should you try it.
