Has anybody played the Wild Arms games here? If so, what did you think of them? I haven't played any of them, but I've heard they're sort of wild-west-ish RPGs which sounds interesting. How do they compare to other RPG franchises? I like most of the Final Fantasies, Skies of Arcadia, Xenosaga...etc. Opinions are welcomed and appreciated.
I bought Wild Arms 3 in a $3 dollar bin and now I know it wasn't just $3 dollars cause it was an old game. I made it through like the first chapter. That might of been the low point on the series though. The game looked like it had like a $10 budget.

I've only played 4 but I thought it was fun. The combat system was pretty neat and I liked some of the stuff they did, like making the powerful warrior a girl who actually has modesty and doesn't fight in a chain-bikini or anything and the wimpy mage is a guy. The only problem is it's impossible to get a perfect game without a gameshark due to a glitch with the enemy library.
WA4 is a great $20 or under RPG: story isn't the best, but the gameplay is a lot of fun thanks to the hex battle system. I've heard WA5 is great too, but I'm waiting for it to hit the bargain bins before I pick it up.
I remember the original Wild Arms as being a low-budget rpg that was absolutely terrific fun to play. I haven't really played any of the new ones, though.
I still have the western theme song whistle tune in my head some days... It's really catchy
I also like the fact that apparently the main female characters seem to be wearing clothes! That's a first. I guess I'll head down to Game and see if they've got any cheap copies. Thanks.
Wild ARMs is a good series that has flown under the radar for quite sometime.
You can pick up 1 and 2 (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong) as Wild ARMs Alter Code F.
Wild ARMs 3 is a pretty good game and I love it.
Wild ARMs 4 is a bucket of AWESOME! I love the combat style with the hexagons, the characters are pretty good and the ending is awesome (although a bit sad). Its totally awesome like, and I would recommend this without a doubt.

Lord, I started whistling it as soon as I saw the thread title. I've only really played WA1 and 3, and while 3 didn't really keep my interest WA1 was an excellent RPG in the early PS1 days. Most of the audio tracks were excellent, and as K_A said you can get an updated version of it as Wild Arms: Alter Code.
It's nice because it's an RPG that's not high fantasy or dystopian future.
The games go in this order in terms of awesomeness and anyone that disagrees is wrong and bad (I can maybe accept people putting 2 in front of 3).
I beg to disagree. #1 & #2 were great at the time, but they really haven't aged very well. I can't imagine enjoying playing them now and I have nostalgia on my side: I imagine they'd be downright unplayable for anyone who missed them the first time. The remake for #1, while not bad, isn't all that exciting either.
Of the games I've played, I'd say 4 is substantially better than 3 because although 3 may have a slightly better plot, 4 has significantly better gameplay. Can't comment on 5.

Heh. I guess that makes me wrong and bad then . My personal order is....

ACF

3 .
Yeah, I'm really not a fan of three... Sorry ^^;. But yeah, basically I really like the series. Not to mention that 1 and ACF has the best comic relief "villain" ever. (ZED!)
I'm currently playing WA5, so far, it's okay. I prefer 4 so far though. If only because 4 was the "perfect" game for me on a personal level. Sure it was short and corny, but the corny-ness seemed almost INTENTIONAL at times and wonderfully over the top, so I really enjoyed it. Not to mention that I simply LOVED the battle and game system.
5 uses a similar battle system but changed a lot of things battle wise that I'm not really ecstatic about.
Still, I am enjoying the game more and more as it goes along.
Thanks for the replies. One more question - how much of a connection to the games have to each other? Are they direct sequels, or is it more like Final Fantasy games?
They all take place on the same world if I'm not mistaken, but despite that, there isn't much of a connection from one game to another. All of them work fine as standalone games.
I think they're like FF games with little continuity.
WA1 is the bestest. Still my favorite soundtrack of any game ever, decent story. Alter Code F butchered all the music but it is a good reimagining of the original game. Plus, more playable characters.
Well, arguments could be made that 3 is in the same world (but many, many, many centuries if not millenia later) as 1, but I *think* the official word is "same world, different realities"
Wild Arms 1 was a wonderful game when it first game out. It came out before FF7 and was great for those like me who were in an RPG lull. It however has not aged very well at all graphically. The music is still very good however. The storyline and characters, however, were great. There were not a large number of RPG innovations in this game compared to other RPG fare, asides from the world map search function. Puzzles were a big thing in this game, and still are. (and half the time they even make sense unlike some random block pushing puzzles other gamesLufia liked to inflict on you)
Wild Arms 2 is in the same vein as WA1. They increased the number of playable characters, better graphics, music is still great, etc. Not much innovation again in gameplay, but solid gameplay that will get you through the great story. The characters are meh except for a couple, but the storyline is solid again.
Wild Arms 3 is an absolutely gorgeous game graphically. The music is good as well. The storyline is a bit bland relative to the others, but the characters are the best of the series. Several advances to the basic gameplay here, including the (awesome) encounter system, which if you don't wanna fight, you just don't sometimes!
Wild Arms: Alter Code F is a PS2 remake of WA1. Improved: Graphics++, Story, Characters. The music is impressively better in someplaces, and not so good in others. The encounter system is added in and some of the story is switched around or mangled to account for differences in the way the game plays, and like WA3, there are no equipable weapons/armor that are different. Good game though.
Wild Arms 4 completely changes the way the series works. The typical RPG battle system has now been replaced with a Hex-grid style strategic battle system that combines some RPG and strategy elements. It's actually a good change and I'm glad to not have to do the same typical fight/shoot/magic/etc battles in most RPGs. The overworld map was removed, sadly. This game also has platformer aspects to it which are a little odd, but if you don't mind them in a game, don't hurt the experience. The graphics are well done, the music is alrigh.
Wild Arms 5 takes the best of the series and combines them into one awesome game, coming out just a little short of where they should have. The overworld map with search function is back. The hex grid battle system remains. The dungeons have become true 3D, but some of the platformers aspects were lost, while some retained. Puzzles still exist. The graphics are stunning, however -much- more animeish. The music is the best of the series in my opinion. (just sit in the world map for a while and tell me that's not an awesome tune)
All games in the series place special emphasis on puzzles. Some of these are your standard push the block, make a path puzzles, however you also get tools such as a hookshot, bombs, magic changing wands, and more. These interact with the environment to get you across places. Some of the puzzles actually make sense even, but some are there simply to make you puzzle solve.
Most of the games also have a bunch of extra side quests, extra enemies to kill, a large extra dungeon, and the like. Lots to do.
Personal Preference from best to worst: 2,3,5,4,ACF,1 (I'm sorry 1, you were wonderful but god have you aged horribly.)
I was totally wowed by the first one and never really realized (at the time) that it was a budget title. I even like the intro movie.
I went back to play it again. The intro was still awesome, but I don't know. Good times are good times though, and it was very fun then. I think the combat kind of dragged on because of the slow animations.

It wasn't a budget title. It was released at full price and its presentation values were pretty standard for a first generation PSX title: i.e. SNES quality 2D visuals with some simple 3D. The thing is that about half a year later, FF7 came out and made Wild Arm's simple 3D visuals look like complete garbage in comparison.
I only played the original but at the time I totally loved it. I can still remember going after RaguRagala(I think that was his name) for that Sheriff Star thingie that boosted all your stats. Ahh so many goat dolls used.

Actually, ACF is just a remake of Wild Arms 1. Though if a remake of WA2 was ever made I'd be all over that .

I still need to play the second so I can play the third, then the fourth, etc.
If I see 4 and 5 for cheap I'll probably nab them.
I don't think the first 2 or the remake made it over to the UK.
