Quick question about black friday

Any idea if the door buster deals will be available online? I used to work at best buy, and to my recollection, people had to come to the store for the really good deals. That was like 2-3 years ago though. I've never partaken in the "stay up all night outside X department store for the good deals" - but i really want to get my g/f a laptop for xmas, and if there is any word about awesome deals via the internet, i'll rise to the occasion.

thanks for the info!

From what I know the majority of the good deals are in the store. I'm sure their online sites will have some specials, but I imagine the specials will mainly be on shipping.

Yeah - the vast majority of the great laptop deals are in store to lure people in and get them to make a sale.

However, there are some fantastic deals on the Dell Vostro right now - it's a business looking laptop but very functional. There's a link to one on bfads.net right now that's $399 shipped and it's not a bad little machine:
    AMD AthlonTM 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-53 (1.7GHz/512KB)
    Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic
15.4" Wide Screen XGA LCD Anti-Glare Display
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ
    120GB 5400RPM Hard Drive
    8X DVD+/-RW w/Double-layer DVD+R Write Capability, for Vista® OS
    ATI Radeon® Xpress 1150 256MB HyperMemory™ (integrated)
    Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Wi-Fi Mini Card
    1 Year Dell Warranty

Check out the dell outlet in both the home and business section for some amazing deals too if refurbished it ok with you. Check it daily as they replenish the refurbs about every day.

The really great deals that are advertised by the big box retailers (like Best Buy) are basically complete scams perpetrated on the unwashed masses to trick you into coming to the store and being ripped off.

Let me explain the bile in the above sentence. Basically, the deals on the front page of the circulars are very limited in quantity. So, even though Best Buy is a huge, nationwide chain, each store will have less than 5 of any of the killer deals on the first page. So, if there's a great deal on a laptop on the front page of their circular, the people in line from 5 PM the night before get first dibs. Basically, an hour or two before the store opens an employee will come out and walk down the line giving people tickets to redeem for items on the front page of the circular. One ticket per person. So, if there are 5 items on the front page, and 5 of each item in the store, the first 25 people in line get all the stuff on the front page of the circular and the rest of the people waiting in line, or that come to the store after it opens are SOL.

There are generally good deals on black Friday, even when you don't get mesmerized by the front page deals. But, if you're really only interested in something on the front page, you have to be willing to put in the time and effort to be one of the first 20 or so people in line, which can easily mean you need to be there Thanksgiving day.

That's what really makes me sick. People get all worked up about the killer deals in the circular, only to find they can't realistically get them. There should be a law requiring rain checks for this sort of thing. At least from the huge national chains.

One last piece of advise. If you do go early and don't manage to get the killer deal you want, don't let yourself buy something you don't want just to justify the time in line. That's what the stores want. They get you there and then you can't buy what you want, so you pick up something else that they "promise" is also a great deal, and you figure you've already invested so much of your own time, you can't leave empty handed, which is how they "win".

I went for Black Friday to a Walmart for a DVD player. When the store opened a manager wheeled out a stack of DVD players, about 50, and they were gone in minutes. We were able to get a DVD player, but after Christmas the damn things were on sale just as low anyway. Like qnx_guy said a lot of the deals are just to lure you into the store to spend money. A good amount of the deals aren't really worth going through the hassle. Also remember you get what you pay for. If something is super cheap on Black Friday it's because the store has taken down their mark up on the item. Trust me I know. On seasonal items like xmas gift sets or even garden plants the mark up was as high as 75% at Walmart. Just one of the many things I learned when I worked there.

And I forgot another Walmart fact....People spend twice as much shopping on Black Friday than they would if they came in and shopped on Saturday, because of the "doorbuster" deals.

A few stores get pretty good stocks on things...

The Circuit City store I work for has 30 of the Compaq laptops in stock, however, they're trying to cash in on people and services, so we're expected to perform Pre-Optimizations to make em' run faster on about 15 to 20 of them... Admittedly it really does make a difference in speed though for only 30 dollars... I do the work myself....

Still.... They'll get ya if you're not careful...

Doesn't help that we're actually PLANNING on our new POS system to crash...

so, you remove all the crapware that comes pre-installed and call it Pre-Optimization? Nothing you can add to a green copy of Windows makes it faster besides the correct drivers.

Pre-Optimizations (at least at Best Buy) meant we did all the windows updates, and removed a lot of the shovelware that is installed on the machine before you get it.

It makes me sad that businesses charge for that, and even more sad that people pay you for that.

Honestly, i've thought about this alot before. People LOVE, (they are fucking addicted) to people doing shit for them. I dunno if this is an american thing, but all my customer act like they are deaf dumb mute and paralyzed all at the same time.

Anyway, I guess i'll prolly just go online and get what i want...i can't do the 5 am massacre.
