Non-HD games on new HDTVs

A little over a year ago, I was trying out a 720p/1080i Panasonic LCD television. I was not at all happy with the images that it was producing when I was playing PS2 or GameCube games or viewing standard definition television. My television experiences were dominated by those, so I decided to go with an HD-CRT.

Now many stations are evolving and broadcasting in HD. Fox (House), NBC (The Office), ABC (Lost), and TBS (lots) in HD are easily acquired, and that's about the only real television I watch. Not only that, I've completely dumped my GameCube and am running out of new PS2 games to play. I have several Wii titles and am finally graduating to PS3 games with the release of Assassin's Creed - and there are more titles that I know are coming this year that I'll be getting my hands on. All the while, PS2 games have all but stopped being produced.

What I'm spending too many words saying is that I think I'm ready for an LCD again, and I'm seriously considering a Sony KDL-40XBR4 (full 1080p). I'm likely going to check one out in Best Buy tomorrow, but I'm already certain that it produces a glorious HD picture. What I want to know is whether or not Wii and PS2 games are going to look like crap, but I don't know how or if I'll be able to test those. I don't expect much from PS2, though it would be nice if they looked a little better than they did on the lesser LCD I tried last year. I'm mainly concerned about Wii, because that is current technology, and I know that Wii games are not truly HD even if they are more advanced visually than GC or PS2.

I'd be surprised if anyone can vouch for that particular television model, but if anyone has any sort of recent higher-end LCD TV that they've tried PS2 or Wii games on, could you please describe how they look?

Thanks for reading.

I didn't find the Wii to look terribly bad on my Samsung LCD using the component cables, or at least not as atrocious as the PS2. Though I guess if you are coming from a CRT, then you might notice a difference. I suspect there will be some sets that still make the Wii look like crap even on today's models, so it will probably be tough to get a satisfactory answer out of people, especially considering that judging quality is fairly subjective.

Wii and PS2 look ok on my HD. You're upscaling the picture and I notice the jaggies a bit more, but whatever. It's not CoD4 or gears, but zelda and mario galaxy is look and play great.

Right, there is no way they'd look as good as PS3 or 360 games since they are upscaled beyond 480p. So, from the sound of it, they look decent. I suppose that's all I could really ask for. As long as they aren't unbearably muddy and such, I shall still seriously consider this TV. Thanks for the responses.
