First Speedpaint attempts (nsfw)

So, I've finally gotten Photoshop working on my comp. Right now I've just been experimenting with things I've always wanted to do with more traditional media, but have been too lazy to.

C&C are greatly appreciated

Now, I want to get into digital painting, but I'm not sure where to even start. I'm having trouble balancing line width and opacity at the same time. So I have a question for you digital artists out there: How do you, personally, balance blending with with brush width? Do you use both the tilt and pressure sensitive features at the same time? (my tablet can't do that, unfortunately). Do you only control opacity with the tablet and then use buttons for the brush width?

Thanks, I appreciate it.

I really like these. The first one's background and texture is not very pleasing, however.

Thanks, Bomb! For the first one I tried to emulate a canvas texture, but went a little overboard methinks.

Another piece. This took far longer than it should have.

I feel all lonely here, in this thread. by myself. alone.

My attempt at a digital "scratch board." The lines are all over the place; I need to work on this.

I don't feel like I'm qualified to give you feedback, but do want to tell you that I love these pieces. I especially like big head guy and grey woman with eyes closed.

as crazy and warped as they are, it all seems to work. I like your minimal use of your color, and I'm dying to know what it is you did to achieve those backgrounds.

correct me if i'm wrong, rustic, but the background texture looks to be done like this:

    insert new layer
past texture (usually found on free texture sites like http://cgtextures.com/)
    set to multiply

or at least, that's how i do bg textures

Actually, for most of them I used a high res scan of an old piece of parchment found through a google image search. I probably shouldn't be doing that, but hey, these are just personal studies. I don't do that anymore though. I've sworn off fancy shmancy textured brushes until I've at least got this painting thing down.

Thanks for all the coments guys! I've been doing a bunch of speedpaints recently. . . More updates will come tomorrow.

So here are those speedpaints I've been doing. Still trying to get the hang of this.

My first attempt at digital painting. Terrible I know. I only put it here to show the progress I've made this week

    babyph5.jpg

And here are some that are (I think) halfway decent. Just took a bunch of random objects, mostly fruit, and painted them.

    bananaju8.jpg

And finally my attempt at a Rembrandt copy.

    rembrandtcopynd5.jpg

So that's what I've been doing all week. Kindly tear them apart. I really want to improve.

I like the first fruit (guava?) and pomegranate. The other pieces of fruit seem kind of flat to me. The third piece of fruit has believable roundness going down the sides, but a sense of depth kind of gets lost toward the middle. I'm not much with digital painting, but two things I might try would be using higher contrast between lights and darks, or maybe using more complementary colors to create the shadows.
But it's coming along, for sure.

Huzzah, that's exactly the sort of comment I wanted! The first ones a mango (mah favorite food).

I see what you're saying about the contrast. It's hard for me to descern lights and darks in color. I need to spend more time mixing the colors before I start painting to make sure the colors are actually darker, and not just a cooler shade.

i'm not sure if you retitled your thread or not but the speedpainting thing just now attracted my eye. I love the whole idea behind it and i've seen some crazy stuff via youtube...like this one guy who painted Locke from Lost - freakin amazing.

ne ways, here are some quick comments on each one of ur pieces:

the baby has some nice facial features but it seems like you went a bit much with airbrush. try adding a new layer and going over with a harder brush set to a lower opacity to define some features and mabey add a little contrast. Perhaps when your done with that you can experiment by that layer to 'multiply' and see if that works out better for you.

Top fruit looks good, but i think the one right below it could use a stronger highlight. seems a bit too thin and rather scribbly.

I love the color on the fourth, but light source seems a bit undefined to me, not quite sure how to put my thoughts into words so I'll just stick with saying i like that one alot.

I like the banana and the detail you've added, but the one below it does seem a bit flat.

The cup below it could definitely use some stronger highlights, especially how it seems the type that would have that sort of glossy finish.

Your rembrant is amazing. I love the color and the detail, and his expression has that sort of ambiguous feel to it and it works. Good work.

Nico Di Mattia is great, but Angel of Bacon would object to your calling what he does speed paintings. That's just "drawing fast." Apparently.

I always thought a bauble was a peice of jewelry, which bells can be, but are not limited to. You know, all squares are rhombuses (rhombii?) but not all rhombii are squares.

That analogy really doesn't work in this instance, but hopefully you get the idea.
    Heh, rhombeye.

Thanks Mango, but you know I'm only using you for the fruit. You knew what this relationship was!

As an aside, I don't understand how people can stand eating apples and bananas when fruits like mangoes and papayas are available. Apples don't even taste that good.
