All I want for INSERT HOLIDAY HERE: A thread for holiday lists and suggestions

edited November 2007 in Games and Technology
Well, Christmas and related holidays are upon us, and because my extended family is pretty...let's say prompt about holiday shopping, they prefer to have Christmas lists up at or around Thanksgiving. So it's that time of year for me to make a list of games I want to get, and I'm guessing it's time for many of you as well. I would like to share what I decided on, in the hopes of inspiring others. At the same time, I can use some suggestions as well.

The games I want are divided into two categories. First, I need some Wii games besides Nintendo's big 4 (Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Super Paper Mario, all of which I have.) Second, I'm looking to get into some console RPGs again. I have most of the big ones of the this and last generation, like most Final Fantasies, the Suikodens, etc., but new series are always worth looking into. I'm thinking of adding Shadow Hearts 3 and Rogue Galaxy to the list, for starters. Also, the Shin Megami Tensei series intrigued me, but I'm hurting for a good starting point; the series always struck me as very complex and hard for a newcomer to get into.

Of course, anyone else can ask for suggestions as well. This isn't a personal Help/Advice thread, after all.

You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.

Pick up Fire Emblem for the Wii. Well.. If you enjoy turn based SRPGs. It's a very deep game, and incredibly fun. :)

I am getting Super Mario Galaxy, a new mouse since my current one is slowly refusing to click (any suggestions for a sub £20 gaming mouse would be nice) Probably another game or two, depending on what deals are about (I really hope Excite Truck gets a price drop somewhere, it's been £20+ everywhere since launch)

    Edit: Also, a PSP.

The thing about Fire Emblems that always freaked me out was that "Oh, by the way, if your character dies, he/she stays dead" thing. There's a reason I only lasted an hour or so into Tactics Ogre. On the other hand, I was fine with the Suikodens I played, though I always resetted if someone died in a war in that series and I had to use a damn walkthrough in 5, what with the many ways you can miss people in that one. Which one does Fire Emblem compare to more?

I had the same problem when I first started to play fire emblem. The key is to keep all your members close by, and always keep the mage/healer out of sight. If you follow that, you wont have any casualties. Plus it gets your blood pumping when you're whooping everyone's ass and someone gets down to 1HP. The Wii version lets you save anytime during the battle, so if you screw up you can reload the game without losing much time.

You haven't gotten Persona 3? It's pretty accessible for a SMT game, even if it is a spin-off.

Yeah, having Wikipediaed the whole thing, that one or SMT3 are my first choices. Fortunately, they don't seem as interconnected as I feared; good thing, since they started in 1987 and half of them weren't released in America. Digital Devil Saga sounds good too, but a bit too weird to start with.

As for FE, I'm thinking I'll wait a bit on that one. The reviews are decent, but the game's massive length has been brought up a lot. With Brawl less than two months away, I find that a unnerving. I'll probably check that one out come Spring or early summer.

My Christmas list is pretty small this year; Fire Emblem, Persona 3, Brave Story, and Shadow of the Colossus (hate to say I've never played SotC, and will have tomatoes thrown at me if I were to ever say it in public). A small selection, since I have pretty much every other game I want right now and still have a backlog of about 7 or so others to clear through.

But I am picking up a 40GB PS3 and Ratchet and Clank on my birthday, just 2 weeks after Christmas. My parents and I are splitting the cost, since it's still around 500 dollars despite the price drop. So, that'll be a nice present to spend time with during my month off between semesters. Might pick up Orange Box or Assassin's Creed shortly thereafter.

Rogue Galaxy is good fun, as long as you enjoy (not terribly difficult) action-RPG combat. Be warned that if you're a neurotic completionist, it will eat your life.

Also, Dragon Quest 8 if you missed it.

The Shadow Hearts and Shin Megami Tensei games are arguably the best JRPGs out there.
    Arguably.

This in tangible form, and MDK. Possibly Thief Gold if I can justify owning both copies.
