I have a computer virus tonight! I keep getting popups just by merit of being online, and the computer seems slower than usual.

Norton says everything is fine, but when I run scans it will detect and resolve a couple of things, but this doesn't seem to be helping me at all.

Last time I trusted H/A with my computer needs, they threw some confusing words at me. Also, this way is more entertaining.

So I implore you, SE++: why isn't Norton doing its job? How do I fix this without spending money?

    norton is a slow, bloated piece of crap

    I wouldn't be surprised to discover it also doesn't do its job, though it was never put to the test on my computer since I never had any viruses while it was installed

    Boot to safe mode with networking and using internet explorer go to www.bitdefender.com, click the Scan Now button under the Online Scanner and go away for 2 hours.

    Failing that set your computron on fire and put it out with holy water and say like thr...no elevin hail marys and then throw somthing out the window.

    Also, if you arnt using it already, make the switch to firefox. And stop being stupid or letting stupid people use the computer. I dont run any software on boot including any anti virus and I never have a problem. I just use my routers firewall.

    Thank you, I think I will try this. Although Fortitude's bitdefender thing sounds like an attractive option as well.

    Dude, run bitdefender in safemode BEFORE you install AVG. Installing an anti-virus on a system with a virus probably wont help anything. It could but its like sewing a patch onto a pair of pants covered in shit. Clean the shit off first THEN patch it up.

    Think of your system like a window, and someone throws a ball of mud that dirties the window and also cracks it a little. The mud (being the virus) should be cleaned off before you attempt to patch the crack.
