Ok, I've now settled on getting a PS3, thanks to those helping me make the decision.
The parents are buying me it for birthday and xmas (And I'll be chipping in £100 or so too) and I have questions regarding the various SKUs themselves!
Over here in the UK we only seem to have the 60gb and the 40gb models available. The 60gb is flying off the shelves and all reports point to it not being re-stocked. What am I losing out on with the 40gb model? Is it PS2 compatibility and Wireless? Is this all? If so it's not too big a deal for me as:
a) I have a ps2
and
b) The PS3 will be connected wirelessly as I'll hopefully be streaming some pretty High Def files to it from my PC.
Is there anything else I'm missing out on with the 40gb model? Is the 60gb REALLY worth the extra money (It seems for £350 I can either get a 40gb with 2 games and 2 films or a 60gb with nothing).
Thanks for the help folks, I'm sure other people will be facing the same problem this xmas too so hopefully this thread'll help them!
nope, you still get wireless, the only other thing that's missing is sd/memory stick slots and two usb ports
which isn't even a huge deal, since usb hubs and sd readers should work fine
the 60gb is great if you play ps2 games a lot still and don't want to plug them both in at once, but other than that it's pretty much just the bc that you'll be missing out on
I can live without memory stick slots, I've never used the damn things on my Wii.
Oh. Wait. The gamestation page is clearly a tad fucked, the other specs also include:
40gb
HDD : 2.5" Serial ATA (20GB)
::Edit:: No shitstorm shall begin, I shall have no bad mouthing of the PS3 in this thread, unless it's bad mouthing of the 40gb vs the 60gb! I already have a 360 AND a Wii and I enjoy them both equally. Not every thread has to descend in to Sony bashing.
I just would like some opinions establishing the facts Because clearly I have been missinformed.
The UK 60 GBmodel has dodgy PS2 backwards compatibility (DMC3 freezes at the same point every time, for instance, making it impossible to complete), and the 40GB model has none at all. That's all I really know for sure.
Well, on reflection the only PS2 games i play nowaday are Guitar Hero 1 and 2 and 80s, Light Gun Games and Shadow of the Colossus and Ico. So for that (being the ps2 guitar doesn't work) I could just keep my ps2 set up to my upstairs tv (where standard light guns will actually work).
So is that literally it folks? 20gb of extra storage (When I can upgrade the hd anyway) and SD card slots?

Actually, Sony reportedly fixed that problem with the 2.0 update. I haven't tried it yet (I haven't bought a memory card converter, so haven't tried many of my PS2 games) but DMC3 is meant to run perfectly well now.
Anywho, if you don't care about backwards compatibility go ahead and get the 40GB. The smaller HDD space is a non-issue considering you can just go buy a 120GB one and the lack of memory stick and a couple of usb slots isn't a big issue considering most stuff (including Rock Band's controllers) runs wirelessly.
Well, it still has SOME USB slots right? I'm happy with it having less
40gb it seems it is then. PS2 can become my bedroom console!
Cheers folks, any other downsides, let me know.
It still has two USB slots, which is perfectly fine. Personally, I only ever really use two slots at a time anyway and even then, I only have my Bluetooth headset plugged in because I can never be bothered using it.
abducens: Would you mind it if you stopped trolling?
Yeah, up to now I've had two threads on the PS3 to gather some info (I would have posted this in the last one but it wouldn't have got much attention due to the title) and both have been very civil. For reference I meant any other downsides to the 40gb PS3.
Two USB slots is fine, especially as I hear USB hubs work ok.
Regarding the wireless controller, is it battery powered or is there a recharge kit like with the 360?

it's an internal battery that charges by plugging in to any powered usb port
the ps3 will only charge it while turned on though, but that hardly matters since it takes hardly any time to charge and lasts forever

You can plug it into your PC and it'll charge it, in fact I think the Wii and/or 360 might charge it as well.
Grinch: It doesn't matter now but you could've just edited the title in your other thread. You just need to click 'edit' and then 'go advanced'.
Yep, I could've done, but then I'd have to edit the OP and "Go Advanced" really doesn't work well on this work internet connection for some reason (neither does the search function).
If I were you, I'd worry less about whether you are getting the 40 or 60 Gigger, and see what particular bundles you can get.
What I mean is, although as a stand-alone unit, there is money saved with the 40 Gig (£300<£350), I know that recently the 60 Gig had a price cut while it was still bundled with two free games.
So by getting the 60 Gigger, by the time you've bought a couple of games, you might actually save money over the 40 Gig unit. Some stores have better bundles than the online retailers. Both Woolworths and Argos have had some excellent (and not so excellent) bundles recently on both PS3 and 360.

Do you what, want it to happen? It won't - see the last "advice" thread of this type.

If you're worried about disk space, I got a Seagate 120GB drive and it's been working fine.
Controller charge lasts a long time, and yeah, you can charge them with any USB laptop/PC.
EDIT: Also can charge controllers while unit is sleeping if you enable "Wake on PSP," if you have ver2.0.

Just a thought.
