Games where you can fly around in wide-open, big levels?
I'm looking for some recommendations. Flying around with the Red Star in Super Mario Galaxy reminds me of how much I loved flying around with solo-Kazooie in Cloud Cuckoo Land in Banjo-Tooie. Are there any games that are focused completely on flying like that with characters? NiGHTS seems it might be (never played it), is that a correct comparison? And are there any other games like that you guys can recommend? How about Pilotwings, is that similar?
Any recommendations are very much appreciated. I hope I'm describing correctly what I'm looking for. It's that sense of freedom and peacefullness that comes from flying around like Icarus. The flying we all wish we could do IRL.
Pilotwings 64 is about exactly what you want. Flying around Holiday Island using the bird wings, be it sunny day or starry night, with the amazingly peaceful soundtrack, is about as mellow as it gets. Sightseeing around the Little States is also pretty fun... and, if you happen to want some action, the option of shooting rockets at a giant mechanized chicken rampaging through the states is always enjoyable.
Er, like Icarus? You don't want to fly around like Icarus. That didn't turn out very well for him.
But as to your meaning, well, I kinda like the fact that I can cruise around the world in seconds in Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. Once you get into dungeons you can't fly, but damned if you don't cruise when you're in the world map.
If you have a monster computer, and willing to learn how to take off, basic flight and maybe land, Flight Simulator X is fantastic and exactly what you are looking for.

Warhawk really gives you an awesome sense of flying.
Replace peaceful though with adrenaline filled moments of sheer exhileration and terror. :P

Or you can skip most of that learning curve by getting the mod that just lets you hijack any plane in midflight with boxcutters and fly it wherever the hell you want.
GTA San Andreas has a big world you can fly around in, once you progress to the point where you have access to planes.
Steal a motor bike and crash jump over the fence and you can be flying right away. Or, you could bmx jump over one of the fences from the off ramp in the first area.
As far as games I'd recommend - MS flight simulator and IL Sturmovik series are both great flight sims. They might be a touch more frustrating to get off the ground and land, but they are a blast when you are in the air, especially if you have TrackIR.

Yeah, that's not quite the tranquility I'm looking for :P. Thanks for teh suggestion though.
Pilotwings 64 looks to be exactly what I'm looking for, I wonder how I missed that game when it first came out since I have a pretty expansive N64 collection. Are there any plans for that to be released on the Virtual Console yet?

That Superman game for the 360 involved lots of flight...

Super Monkey Ball 2 has a great gliding mini game ... Monkey Ball Target ... very mellow but great multiplayer flying fun.

If you have a Wii then Endless Ocean/Forever Blue might offer a similar, if underwater, experience.

The game wasn't top notch. It did get butchered in reviews but you can still have a pretty good time with it. Rent it if you love flying around. I spent about an hour one day just flying around the city, it's pretty amazing.
You might be able to download the demo from XBL still. You could fly around a decently large area (small in comparison to the rest of the game, though).
If grindy Korean MMOs are your thing, Fly for Fun (more often called FLYFF) lets you fly around anywhere once you get to level 20. I've played a bit of it, it's pretty standard, getting to level 20 would take about 4-6 days of casual play probably.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, it should still be Free to Play (with micropayments for extras and whatnot)

The Ace Combat series has a free flight mode that allows you to fly missions without enemies. You need to beat the missions to unlock that mode, though.

Assuming you're not not looking for the purely Earth bound stuff, Space sims are awesome for this.
You might be interested in games like the X series, the MMO Eve Online, heck, even Freelancer. It's sometimes nice to just kick back and cruise around the cosmos taking in the nebulae.
They do admittedly feature combat, but it's usually not hard to avoid the likely areas, or just get away from it altogether.
It's not exactly free roaming (in fact it isn't at all) but if you own a N64 or a DS Didy Kong Racing is fun. I also enjoyed the jump jets in TRIBES for the PC, keep in mind you have recharge your jets. I also recomend Crimson Skies for the XBOX, alot of people still play that online. There are a lot of map glitches to exploit also. Have you ever played Morrowind? That's a huge game to fly around in, but watch out for cliff racers.

Link?
Edit - Also, yeah, Pilotwings 64. Amazing flying experience. Remember to hit Mario's nose! As for it coming out on the VC, it definitely will be, but when is unknown.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

Especially when you use the unlimited magic meter cheat so you can keep flying forever and go very very high.

The first level of each area consists of free-roaming job hunting and exploration.
... what?

sorry to lime, but he's right.
get a quieter plane, and just explore. put on whatever music you want.
The levels are fairly large.

But, it's also densely populated by furries, so approach at your own risk. :rotate:
If it's tranquility your looking for, we always liked SSX Tricky, the full mountain run.

Provided you get to level 14 and take the Fly power pool you can just fly around doing nothing.
