Image optimizer - my images are too big!

My job requires me to take a lot of digital pictures and they tend to eat up a lot of space. So I was thinking of shrinking them all down. I can do that in Photoshop, no problem, but the thing is I have a lot of them and I was hoping to automate the whole thing in the future.

What programs do you recommend? Is there anything out there that can shink a batch of jpgs to a particular file size or resolution? Preferably freeware... I don't think anyone's ever going to audit my computer, but since it is a job thing you can't be too careful.

Photoshop does have a batch processing feature that can do this.
