HDTV vs 360 what am I doing wrong?

I am fairly hopeless when it comes to technology so hopefully someone here can help me out.

Okay, so I decided to pick up a new TV on since they were on sale today and I got a 46" Sharp Aquos 1080p brought it home and hooked it up to my 360. First I tried connecting it with the blue/green/red wires (hdmi?) switched the switch on the back of my xbox to the HD setting and started it up. What happened was I got video but no sound. Then I tried the yellow/red/white cables and switched the xbox off the hd setting and it works with sound/video but I have pretty bad lag and playing games just doesn't work. I called a friend who said he had the same problems with his TV/xbox setup so I'm guessing its a problem with either my 360 or the way I'm hooking it up and not an actual problem with the TV.

Any ideas?

The red/green/blue cables are component video. They do not carry sound at all. You'll have to hook up the analog audio cables or the optical audio cable to your tv or receiver.

HDMI is a single cable it a smaller end and a larger end that looks similar to a computer monitor cable. It's capable of carrying HD video and surround sound on the single cable. You'd have to check if the 360 lets you do this I'm not sure. I also don't think the cable comes with 360 unless its the Elite version. I'd also check if your TV takes HDMI input before going and buying a cable.

Thanks!! looks like that was the case. I just plugged in the red/yellow and now I get sound/video with no lag.

The red white and yellow cables are going to have a worse picture than the component (Green, Blue and Red.) The Red White and yellow are called composite, and they cannot do HD. You want to plug in the Green, blue and red component cables, and then plug in the red and white audio cables as well. so have a total of 5. The audio cables on the 360 are all red and white on the plug, while the red for video will be gray with a red band on the top like the rest of the component cables.
