Who here plays DAoC? [Dark Age of Camelot]

Who here used to play DAoC?

Who here remembers when the big three MMO's where DAoC, UO, and EQ?

    I don't

    I did

    And I do

It was my first MMO, it will always have a special place in my heart

It's been rapidly outclassed by other games though, so I can't really get into it anymore

This game was great for its time when it came to PvP, but had one of the worst grinds imaginable. I've heard it's been lowered dramatically, but no amount of Realm Points could get me to do it again :P.

I actually bought it again about 6 months ago and had fun.. until I remembered how flawed some of the PvP mechanics were.

Not being able to cast at all (aside from your one quickcast) when someone is attacking you is just an abysmal idea. Same deal with not being able to hit anyone if you dare strafe in combat. Just terrible design decisions that really bugged me back then but 6 years later make the game completely unplayable.

    I do! I do!

Although I believe the only reason I continue playing is for the lack of anything better to play. I've yet to play another game where I can just pick up and go and have fun in an RvR environment in any situation in a short period of time.

I mainly mess around in the battlegrounds and if I want to play a new class or something it only takes a day or two of levelling to get there. (my most recent character took less than 15 hours to get to 39) If I want to solo, I can find a solo fight. If I want to group, I can group. The community is still above the critical threshold where my brain melts from reading region chat.

I sure hope that WAR can capture some of the DAoC spirit while updating the mechanics.

If anyone wants any advice/help let me know.

im starting to think mythic decided to make daoc when they first came up with WAR. I know it sounds dumb but there has got to be a reason why they thought the TOA expansion was a good idea

I think theres still like 3000 people on it, but theres just not much worth coming back for now. these days the most fun you can have these days is bringing a low 20s guy into thidranki

I looooved me some DAoC back in the day. It is the only reason I'm at all interested in WAR, since I'm not a fan of fantasy games. WAR40k by Mythic would have made me cry tears of joy.

Surprisingly I wasn't even that big into RvR. I liked it a lot but the real draw, for me, in DAoC were the classes. There were so damn many classes with neat little mechanics all their own. I really loved that. I'm tempted to run a trial of it so I can try out the newer classes I never got the chance to play. I heard something about Sirens and Vampires? Nifty.

Used to play. I had a minstrel back before the big nerf who was ungodly...

Was pretty good times. Some friends and I made a guild on bedevere (i think) called Emain and became universally hated. It was glorious.

When I quit DAOC, for all 3 accounts for the reason I was quiting it put "Waiting on DAOC2" since at the time they were discussing either overhauling the entire combat engine or working on a new game.

Turns out the new game they started working on was WAR. So works for me ;D

I have been asked to learn the ropes on this game (hense the trial account), and since I have little else better to do I guess I will. What can you all tell me about it that you like, or didn't like? Where was it awesomesause, and what would you change if you had the magic "Change Stuff" button?

The classic cluster is still pretty busy, about as much as an average server was back during DAoC's prime.

    What I love about DAoC:

RvR: From a lowly 1v1, to 8v8, to zerg vs zerg, it is amazing. What you do matters. That extra 10% magic or melee damage for owning an enemy relic is pretty significant. I like the rewards for RvR'ing. The higher realm rank you get, the more RPs are required. Realm abilities are for the most part balanced. A low realm rank person vs a high realm rank person is at a disadvantage, but can still win. Same with numbers, more people is not always better. A small, skilled team working together can often take out the much larger unorganized enemy.

PvE: These days, pretty much everything (on classic, worth doing) can be done with a group or two. If I don't want to group, I can level up fine solo, and even gear myself decently.

Focus: The game is RvR. It has its PvE side but Mythic learned their lesson from ToA. On classic you can take a brand new character and be ready for end game RvR in a week or two. PvE can be kept to a minimum if you want. You get experience and cash from RvR.

Melee styles: I guess this is different than the mainstream. On my mercenary I have a taunt, I have a followup to my taunt, I have an anytime style, I have a followup to that anytime style, I have a detaunt, I have styles that I can use after I parry an attack, I have followups to those styles, if I have a shield out I have styles to use after I block, if I'm dual wielding weapons I have different styles. Am I in front? To the side? Am I behind the enemy? Different styles for everything! Playing a melee class is never boring. Sure you can just spam your anytime, but that's way less fun than pounding your keyboard trying to hit 9 with your left hand to land the 3rd style after an evade.

    What I dislike:

Balance: Although they've gotten much better, Mythic has a tendency to overdo things. Archers do too much damage? We'll reduce it by 50% and see what happens. Valkyries suck? Well lets give them instant heals and the best melee damage in the game! They should take little bites and make small changes at a quicker pace rather than BOOM once every few months.

ToA: Ya, no excuses, as much as I love DAoC....

Stealth: I'm glad they're removing it from WAR. I can see stealth working, maybe you become more visible the closer you get to someone, but invisibility is dumb.

As far as I remember, the "Classic" server is just DAoC as it is now, just without ToA. Same patches, updates, and other expansions.

    Just no ToA.

I never understood why they called them classic servers. Yes, they got rid of TOA, but as long as Catacombs and LOTM content is still available, theres still no reason to do any of the mainland/SI content.

The only thing I remember people saying was terrible about TOA was the item drops that leveled up as you used them. What else was so terrible that it has developed this awful stigma?
Like if the item tables were completely changed would the missions and encounters and whatnot in TOA be good? I was always interested in playing the TOA content, because I'm a sucker for underwater stuff, but the pure hatred the expansion received prevented me from ever returning.

The Classic servers also stop buffbots. Which they should have done on every server if they cared about the game but I guess they were too attached to the income from the extra accounts.

I played DAoC for a while but I never hit level cap because god damn was the levelling boring. It's a shame too because they had a really good thing going with the RvR(for its time), but instead of refocusing the game towards PvP they extended the awful grinding with ToA. And Mythic never really seemed to know what they were doing with class balance, I hope Warhammer can do it better. I also really liked their emphasis on tradeskill items, but skilling up was just another horrible grind.

When I quit shortly after ToA hit, it was over the massive, massive grind you had to go through to get Artifact levels and shit just to stay competitive in RvR, coupled with the terrible underwater controls and (at release time, at least) long lines to get anything done.

Nowadays if you rolled on an older server, I don't know how you'd ever get Artifact stuff done, since I don't remember a lot of it being soloable.

Last time I played, i got a valk to lvl 40 in 2 weeks of doing catatcombs runs ( wich is now free to download I belive) and running the Bgs tell I capped. Seemed much faster then the amount of time it took me to level my OG berserker to 40, wich was just under the glacial speed of 2 years :)

Nowadays if you rolled on an older server, I don't know how you'd ever get Artifact stuff done, since almost all of it is soloable now.

people decking out farmers and buffbots in TOA gear really fucked things up. Crap that you needed whole groups to beat now only required a servant necro and a buffbot. these people would just camp artifact mobs and scroll dropping mobs to sell their drops for outreagous prices. Nowadays you dont need the artifact itself, you just need the scrolls and credit for being in the group when the artifact boss dude died.
Something that bugged me that isnt TOa related is something that was in the game from the beginning: crafted armor. There is stuff you can make that is on par if not better than TOA artifacts, if only because you decide what stats and procs can go on what. You can make the money to craft this crap by farming TOA stuff and selling, making even more if youre PLing someone (back in the day this service cost about 2p per level.) Catacombs didnt help at all, you just moved to the instances for farming/PLing and got loot that replaced the TOA trash loot (which was already overpowered to begin with) and introduced us to the warlock and the bainshee, two of the most unfair pvp classes in the game. For about two years bainshees could hit players with cone attacks THROUGH walls; two bainshees could wipe entire groups. Warlocks (at the time) could one hit kill people. Now LOTM came out with even more powerful stuff, and even more easily farmable gold to acquire.

DAoC was great and in someways still is. And I think they still hold the record for smoothest MMO launch ever. Correct me if I am wrong, cause I would like to know if they got dethroned.

I remember I had a mercenary and grouped with a RL married couple. Both roleplayed Scouts (Scouts were the badass archer class for Albion right?). It was the best time I have had in an MMO. I had to do nothing except sit back and soak in the XP. As a plus the couple were very entertaining roleplayers, which I don't normally care for.

I used to live and breath DAoC. I had a 50 druid who wasn't a buffbot (she is now controlled by a friend, who turned her into a f'kin buffbot) and a 47 nightshade. I quit prior to ToA and haven't tried any of the new content. It was a blast to play. I was one of the early legendary crafters (when you could only max one skill) and had a blast making custom armor for folks and lowbie gear for alts. I even offered free on spot repairs for all gear I made. DAoC was awesome in so many ways.

Used to play. I had a lvl 40-something sorcerer, then got bored of levelling because it was slow as hell. Rolled a necro, got it to 50 at what seemed like the speed of light by farming those priests down in the the swamp place, next to Cornwall. Of course, then I discover necros are completely useless in RvR. I started levelling up the sorc again, and then ToA came out and I became too bored to continue.

I remember charging a tower in Emain with a couple other wizards, getting there, finding 40 or 50 hibs, and then having the three of us instantly slaughter the lot of them with a simultaneous Volcanic Pillar.

DAoC was a hell of a game. Every so often, I get the bug to try it out again, but it's feeling pretty empty these days, and the depressing feeling puts me off before I get much of anywhere.

I agree with Accualt, though: it's the main reason I'm interested in WAR. I'm really hoping WAR can recapture some of that feeling.

they just changed every single style in the game, to add more 2 style chains to the game and make it so that every 50 spec weapon style isn't either totaly not worth getting or the holy shit awsome. So far i dig the changes.
