Need guitar help (for Christmas present)

So the situation is this: My Dad used to really enjoy playing his guitar, but through the course of life and a crap job, it fell out of use. So, for Christmas, I want to get him some things to spark his interest and nudge him along to playing his guitar again. Now, I don't have enough money for a (good) new guitar, so what I'm asking is what would the necessary accessories be for him to have an enjoyable experience?

Any help is appreciated

Does he play acoustic or electric?

Also, look around at local pawn shops and in the classifieds. Sometimes you can get lucky.

    craigslist.

failing that, there are a lot of entry level guitars that are acceptable. the only reason i'd say to get a new one would be so that if its not right, he can exchange it (this is important, as instruments can be very very very subjective).

give us an answer about acoustic or electric, and we can help narrow down the feild.

If he's like my Dad, he'll need a guitar stand, maybe a book of songs from his favorite artist, just something to get him back down the right track, picks (duh). Sides that I don't know till you answer the EvsA question.

so you want him to pick up the guitar that he already owns again? An accessory package and setup for his instrument would be pretty cool. A new set of strings, polish, picks, a stand, etc, and a setup from a local luthier where he sets the intonation (how in tune the instrument is with itself), action (how low or high the strings are from the fretboard) and checks the electronics (if it's electric) to get the guitar back in fighting condition would be awesome. The setup should be less than 100 bucks assuming the guitar doesn't need tons of work.

Maybe challenging him to a few rounds of guitar hero or rock band around Christmastime would also help spark his interest. :P
