Using a microphone

I'm trying to use a microphone on my laptop. It seems to think that there's an inbuilt microphone, but I don't know for sure. I can't get it to work, but apparently there is a SigmaTel microphone in there. Is this just the software, and I need to buy a microphone? Because whenever I go to help, it says to check that the microphone is plugged in properly.

Basically, is SigmaTel software or hardware, and if it's hardware, how do I get it working?
