The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
So recently I bought The Orange Box for PC and remembered how much I really do like PC gaming. I used to PC game all the time, but now, because my PC is relatively shit, I have mainly been a console gamer.
Very soon I will be getting a new PC. The rig will be good enough to run any game on the market so far.
I'm thinking of getting Crysis and The Witcher. I've heard some cool things about The Witcher, and I'm in a bit of an RPG mood. I also definitely want to get into Company of Heroes.
I was thinking of checking out Hellgate London, but I will most likely wait to see if the new patch fixes most of its issues.
What else should I look out for? What are you PC gamers playing at the moment?
I just bought a new PC recently, and I installed X3 again. After all the patching and with a decent rig, it finally runs like a dream, and the bugs are at a minimum. It's absolutely wonderful when you get into it, so if you value space sims, you should definitely check it out. It's only $20 on Steam, and it's still incredibly beautiful.

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
You might want to ask yourself how much time you've got for online multiplayer though, since once you've played TF2, you'll probably want to spend a lot more time with it.
As for my suggestions:
- Crysis (awesome sandbox gameplay with the super-suit. Just be forewarned, the game ends suddenly)
- Supreme Commander / Forged Alliance (although this is more of a love it or hate it game. It's very different from the micro of games like DoW and World In Conflict, everything's about large scale strategy. Might want to try the demo, but it's still my personal favourite RTS)
- World In Conflict (Singleplayer isn't too great, but Multi is where it's at, especially if you can team up and co-ordinate with people).
- Gears of War (assuming you haven't played it on 360 already. Plot's not too great, but it's really good in the stop and pop department. It's probably the best port I've ever played).
- Bioshock (again, unless you've played it on 360 already).
- Shadowgrounds: Survivor (short and fun indie top-down shooter a la "Smash TV". Can be co-op played on the same PC (no online co-op though, unfortunately)
Personally, I wouldn't bother with Hellgate, from what I've been hearing it's not all it's cracked up to be. That was certainly the impression I got from the demo.
I need to get in on the Witcher sometime, sounds like fun. There's probably plenty of other games, but I can't think of them right now.
There's one server on BF2142 that's awesome if it has any open slots, and the community is pretty awesome on that server. On other servers, it's still a fun game, but, well, it's an online game and there are some people who suck, can't play in a team, and there's always that annoying time when there's someone on the other side of the map who destroyes everything with a Zeller Advanced Sniper Rifle and why can't they be on my side of the fight?!
Anyways, I play on the TacticalGamers server and the community is pretty good there.
I am primarily a PC gamer, with a little bit of Wii on the side. This is my normal cycle of games (depending on what I feel like doing):
Orange Box
Vampire: The Masquerade
Hellgate: London
Call of Duty 4
Nothing much else past that. Though if you like simple (and hard) RPGs you should look up Echelon Book 1, there's a thread about it somewhere around here.
It just came out on the 19th and with all the shooters that came out in November it's not surprising that it's still a fairly small community.
That said I have yet to not find a good dedicated server with a space open when I wanted to play some Warefare. That's all I've really played online. There seems to be a plenty of CTF, Vehicle CTF, and Deathmatch dedicated servers as well.
I think more fans of the series are starting to migrate over to UT3 as well. There first couple days I was topping the scoreboards, but this weekend the competition got much better.
Anyway in a world where every other game is a modern day tactical shooter UT3 feels like a welcome throwback to the days of old. With a much better coat of paint.
There is a demo as well, but it doesn't include Warefare mode. It will give you an idea of the gameplay, and show you how well you can run it.
Ooh, 4X games, forgot about those. If you're into them, I think Galactic Civilizations 2 is really good (get the expansion pack, that allows more options for spying and stuff).
It's an older title, but I picked up Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines: Long Title the other week, and that was surprisingly good. Like, really. I was originally put off by the whole "wooo, vampires" thing, filing it under 'goth' and so on, but I have to admit the quality of the writing that I've encountered so far has been well above par.
Seriously though just download Steam and you can spend more money on awesome games than you can afford. Also you don't have to wear pants while you shop.

It should be said, that Fahrenheit still sucks hard. Unless you like playing simon says whilst getting your brain repeatedly fucked by alien pygmie monkeys from the internet

I didn't think anyone actually enjoyed STALKER. I sure as hell didn't. People complain about the bugs found in Hellgate, but think STALKER is okay? Just seems kinda weird to me.

If you do decide to shop on steam for games, make sure you investigate the pricing. For some games, Sid Meir's Pirates for example, the actual boxed copy is CHEAPER.

I don't think STALKER is ok.
I think it's fucking awesome being any measure. Sure, it's buggy, but it's playable, and it's one of the greatest gaming experiences I've ever had. And I had some pretty extraordinary experiences in my gaming life. Seriously, this game sucked me in like it was the only life I had. It has gorgeous graphics, engaging gameplay and some great maps. And the "feel" of each area and stage of the game is remarkably different. The sound is really great (when it's not broken ) and the guns rock really really hard.
The start of the game is kinda daunting for beginners, but it gets so god damn good later. not much later. And I can now headshoot dudes pretty well even in the earlier parts, after beating it once.

Depends on where you live.
Steam games are cheaper than any hardcopy in Brazil.
Dawn of War or Company of Heroes are both good stuff if you're into RTS. If you prefer a more Starcraft/Wow-style game, get DoW. If you like WW2 and have a good computer, get CoH. I believe there may be a gold edition of CoH too now or soon, which has the stand-alone expansion Opposing Fronts with it.

STALKER is incredible, and there are some pretty cool mods for it too. Sure, its buggy, but its gotta be like $15 dollars now, and its the only FPS I could play 3+ times through single player.

What about Battlefield 2142?
Crysis
Quake Wars: Enemy Territory
I'm kinda waiting for a decent new driving game to show up but I did enjoy both Test Drive: Unlimited and DiRT
I love BF2142.
It seems I'm the only one who does though, for some reason that game takes a lot of flak. I don't know why, it's fun as hell.
As for my suggestions:

Definitely get CoD4, the Witcher, Orange Box, and Overlord.
Well, Fallout 3 is coming, but that's on the 360 too.
"...it's on the 360 too" is a common phrase in PC gaming nowadays.
Neverwinter Nights 2 is ok, and its expansion I've heard is much better, so there's that too at least
But yes, the Baldur's Gate days seem so far gone.
I do assume you're not counting Vampire as recent in that 'anymore' statement. Because that's a damned good RPG.
Sometimes it's best if you don't.
Clearly a plus.
