Here's an idea: After each mission, you get a performance evaluation that looks at what methods you used, what worked, and what didn't. An example evaluation might be "You tried to talk the terrorist leader down, but it didn't work out too well. On the plus side, you made short work of them with your pistol after the negotiations failed. The way you hacked the security system beforehand to give yourself an edge in the battle was ingenious and showed foresight, too." After which, you get a binary choice: you can either work on the skills that failed you, or focus on your strengths. Your character then receives training (as in, real, honest to god training that occurs offscreen) based on your choice.

Every player gets the same amount of experience, it makes logical sense, and it's almost impossible to meta-game. It does kind of limit the game to a clear cut mission based structure, but it's not like the first two didn't do that anyway.

Of course, you could just let the player pick a predetermined number of skills to improve in between missions, but I think limiting the player's choice a bit makes things more interesting and cuts down on meta-gaming. In the ideal RPG, you shouldn't even be thinking about your attributes, only their repercussions.

Okay, now I do love this idea. I was always really fond of the way System Shock 2 allocated your starting skill points, and I'd be interested to play a game that built an entire skill system around that concept, driven by the actions of the player. I don't suppose anyone knows of an existing game with that sort of mechanic?

Oh, and I seem to have left out my most important point in my rambling post above. Creating a suboptimal character in Deus Ex is possible, and results in a novel and challenging approach to the game world. Creating a suboptimal character in Oblivion is a certainty unless you plan it out on paper beforehand, and results in the player being gang-raped by bears.

Wow, I just beat IW again... I was going to help JC and Paul as in my first playthrough a couple years ago. This time, though, a little spiderbot came into their room and I hid behind paul so he would kill it for me when he was zapped.

Instead, in a flash, paul shot the bot with a flamethrower (which doesn't hurt bots, I think) and ended up killing one of the many greys around him. A grey fought back and then JC and Paul proceeded to massacre them all (JC even shot a couple of their corpses with a magrail)...

    I didn't like that...

Ideally, what I'd like to see, rather than any of this prequel/sequel business, is for the name "Deus Ex" to simply signify a certain style of futuristic FPS/RPG hybrid, applied to a series of otherwise unconnected games, like Final Fantasy or Quake. I think that to some degree sequelization is fundamentally incompatible with something as choice-driven as DX; IW managed it (one of the few things they got really right) but "they all happened!" is a trick that works exactly once.

A thought just occurred to me.

Since its only been about a month since i've had a computer worthy of the name, I've never actually played Invisible War.

Is it worth buying? amazon only wants $10 US for it.

Basically, anyone who says that the system in Deus Ex was bad is a rapist.

I never said it was bad, just that I hated it and it could be better. I don't wanna be a rapist! D:

Hell... I don't actually know why I'm arguing at this point. Deus Ex isn't about the system that you use to play it with, it's about the mad plot and all the options available at any given time.

"Do I LAM-climb up the building, or sneak through the door with the chef, take out the bots, or go through the trellis into the church?"

Heh. I LAM climbed up the cathedral, almost made it to the top, then someone walked past on the other side.

    Brilliant.

Both Deus Ex 1 and 2 are available on GameTap. You can take GameTap on a trial run for 99 cents. If you just want to play through them once, its a great way to do it cheap. Just cancel your account afterwards. This is great if you are in America.

Since you're in Oz, if you want I could try and see if I could add you as a user on my account. I'll figure out the details, just PM me if you're interested.

Man, I really hope they include social-skills this time. One of the very few things that has always bugged me about DX is that you're not given many opportunities to manipulate people without, you know, shooting them.

Also, if this is a prequel - and the trailer suggests it might be - then that means no Helios. Nuts. :(

Nah, there's no common story between Quake 1 and 2.

Also, I think the important thing for me isn't so much on how I level up, but more on the effect it has as my character develops. By the time you got to the end of Deus Ex, you felt like one powerful son of a bitch. My character could shrug off bullets with ease, run like the wind and leap over tall... cars. Either way though once you had all your augs on and you got to beat down Walton Simons in a nano-tech duel to the death, well you felt pretty good about how far you'd come.

Invisible War just didn't have that. Alex still felt kinda clunky all the way through, and by the end of the game you'd find that you were playing the game in exactly the same fashion as when you started. I'm hoping that in Deus Ex 3 they give me a character who ends up more like Kyle Katarn from Jedi Outcast. Your nanites could give you lots of the same powers, you even have a cool glowing energy sword. Most importantly though is that your abilites make you more than just a soldier dude with a gun. Instead you're ripping people apart like an angry god, choking them to death with your mind and batting aside their bullets with your DTS.

Actually Betrayal at Krondor has a pretty good one, if anyone remembers that game. It was a turn-based RPG, and you pretty much leveled up every part of all your characters. However, you could decide to 'focus' your skills on one or two areas, so that you'd have a higher chance of improving that skill every time you used it.

So I can't sleep and I am in a foul mood. The only thing that is going to put me into a better mood is to fantasize. To dream up something pleasant and cool but also something that is reflective of what I like about what I like about the potential of video games.

TL : DR- I want to talk about the perfect Cyberpunknoiractionstealthsandboxfpsrpg EXPERIENCE, Dues Ex 3.

IN a perfect world all the resources that went into making the Shadowrun game should have been focused into making a Dues Ex Haloesque multiplayer experience so I am just going to go into the single player.

The world would be as realistic as what we have seen of GTAIV, more real actually, a dirtier hyper realism. The people/NPCs would be like GTAs gangs/classes. Lawyers/cops/soccer moms. No need for "every one is an individual" since this game is all about fighting against a oppressive force that seeks to make mankind a hegemony.

The main character would be able to switch to FPS or 3rd person. When aiming a weapon in third person you get over the shoulder like RE4(and it's biters/copycats). In a perfect world this would mean that in both first and third person (if the character is leveled enough) They can parkour in both first and third person. The multi-dimensional terrain would be traversable via climbing wall running etc in first person like they are trying to do with Mirror's Edge.

I have no idea how the games RPG elements would work. I am not an RPG enthusiast. I was happy with Invisible War.

I for one, hope they streamline it even further. Take out all ammo, and give it only one multi weapon. They should also be sure to make even fewer paths and go that extra mile to be sure the story is more generic than an 80s kung fu movie. It will be so great...

The image is actually an outline representing a vast space that looks like a laboratory. "These tables help our artists to see the good spirit that we want to achieve in Two Ex 3. [Translation from website]

Its Confirmed! in the nest few weeks, Eidos will start putting together a team that will be put in charge of working on a classic, starring the most famous medieval thief. during a contest on the during the Mr. Net show on MusiquePlus, the viewer needed to find the name of the new game being developed by Eidos that began with the letter "T". the last installment of thief, deadly shadows, was released in 2005 and was developed by Ion Storm in Austin. it is very plausible to think that the Eidos Montreal team will be offering a sequel to this title soon.

First Image of Deus Ex 3!!

Stephane D'Astou took advantage of his visit to the Mr. Net show in Montreal to present the first image of Deus Ex 3, whose production has been well established in Eidos' new Canadian studio. the image is a concept that represents a vast space which resembles a laboratory. "These sketches help our artists to visualize the spirit that we want to show off with Deus Ex 3. We have appealed to the concept artists from the two preceding games to better grasp the direction that we want this game to have." the pressure is high for the new Montreal studio, especially since the job cuts that Eidos' British management team announced a few weeks ago. in an interview, 2 representatives from the Montreal studio did not really divulge any information about Deus Ex 3. "on YouTube, our fans analyzed a group of images, one at a time in a sort of comic strip commercial. they worked very hard at that." there was no release date announced at the moment.
