So, my friend's little sister just got a new DS Lite (because she got all As on her report card. I never got presents for good grades ), and so her sisters are trying to find games to get her for Christmas and Birthday presents. They, however, are not what one would consider "knowledgeable" on the subject, and turned to me for advice. Unfortunately, my tastes run closer to the "22 year old man" side of the spectrum than the "eight year old girl" side, and so I turn to you all.
She already has Pokemon and Nintendogs, and I already suggested Cooking Mama and Animal Crossing. What else is out there?
You simply can't go wrong with Nintendo Dogs. After that, her taste in games matters -- assuming she's developed a taste! I think NSMB is a pretty good bet, as well as Animal Crossing DS.
How did that Disney Meteos game turn out? My instinctive reaction is that must have raped the spirit of the original by allowing sideways moves, but I'm curious to know whether it turned out to be a good game in its own right.
My girl's little sister is a few years older but has been known to play (in order of most played):
Animal Crossing
Nintendogs
New Super Mario Bros.
Kirby Canvas game thing.
I don't know if NSMB gets frustrating if you can't play it. I seem to remember being able to get lives and go through all "required" content without it getting close to being hard.
But if she has trouble with those types of games, I imagine it would be more frustrating than anything.
Nintendogz is the best one out their for kids. Super Princess Peach is a hit with the ladies. Pokemon. I would veto New Super Mario because it's hard as fuck for a seven year old, go for Peach instead. Cakemania. Meteos Disney, Cooking Mama (I think a sequel just came out), Super Monkey Ball, Animal Crossing, The Sims 2, Kirby's Canvas Curse or Yoshi's Touch and Go.
If she likes Barbies, don't buy the Barby games, because they're half assed and awful.
We picked up Cooking Mama for our 7 year old daughter a few days ago because we were going on a long trip for Thanksgiving and it kept her enthralled. She played for a good 4 hours straight and would have kept playing if we hadn't reached our destination and told her to turn off the DS.
Dude what the hell, I can barely play EBA. I might as well get her Trauma Center.
The Mario Party may be good. She likes to play with this kid that lives across the street from them, so any simple games with single cart co-op would be good fun. Is the DS Mario Party single cart co-op (I'm pretty sure Mario Kart isn't)?
And my girl friends love EBA, but they're also in college. Girls tend to like rhythm games, and I figure at 8 she probably has developed enough of a sense of rhythm to at least get through Easy mode
Brain Age? I'm not sure if it'll be too advanced or whatnot, I guess it depends on how quick she catches onto things. Same with Flash Focus.
New Super Mario Bros., for sure.
Mario Party DS
The Sims? (Not sure, it does have *intimate* situations sometimes, yes?)
Geometry Wars (Coming soon, I believe)
My niece - who is the same age - likes Sims 2 Pets, Nintendogs, Sonic, and Mario. We just got her Cooking Mama or Cake Mania (can't remember which) for Christmas. I would bet Princess Peach would be an ok choice as well - I know I loved it. If she's into the whole Disney thing there are games for Hannah Montana and High School musical that are quite competant when compared to other licensed properties. The first Over the Hedge game is quite good too.
Seriously though I think the aforementioned games are good. I would add Cake Mania 1 or 2. It's like a more complex Tapper. I know I was playing Tapper when I was 5 or 6 so she'll have no problem. It's kind of cute and can be educational toward better coordinating skills as well.
Castlevania isn't really that bad. I played Simon's Quest when I was 8 or 9.
So...New Super Mario Bros., Cake Mania 1, Cake Mania 2, Nintendogs, any of the Sims games (not including Sim City DS), Warioware Touched, Cooking Mama, Pokemon Pearl/Diamond, Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime, and Cooking Mama would be my main suggestions.
Anecdotally, a coworker's daughter got Princess Peach (she is about 7) and totally didn't like it/get it at all. I gave her Cooking Mama to borrow and she fell in love with it.
I guess a lot depends on the type of little girl she is too.
At a Halloween party I went to this year, I got trapped by two 8 year old girls and two 5 year old boys and played NSMB multi with them all night (we had like 3 DSes, including mine) and a great time was had by all. So definitely that one.

Yeah, I definitely suggested Cooking Mama right on the spot, because I see no possible way for her to dislike it.
I'll offer up Super Princess Peach because I could see her getting into that one more than any of the other platformers for the DS; if she likes it, I'll suggest NSMB.
Cooking Mama (Even though you have said this already)
Mario Party
Mario 64 DS
Cake Mania
Hannah Montana, Spongebob, Highschool Musical (Depends on what she really likes)
LEGO Star Wars (Might not be too bad for someone her age)
Animal Crossing
Big Brain Academy
Sonic Rush Adventure
EA Playground
New Super Mario Bros
Tetris DS
Mario Kart
Sonic Rush/Adventure
WarioWare
Yoshi's Island DS
Mario Party Ds
Super Princess Peach
Big Brain Academy
Kirby Squeak Squad
Cooking Mama
Chocobo Tales is really fun. And it's pretty easy for the most part. Some of the mini/micro games get really frustrating when you are trying to get the higher rewards, though. But story mode is really easy and short. It's been a while since I played it but I think it took me less than 12 hours to beat it. The visuals are adorable and the game uses the same engine as FF3. Everything can be controlled with the stylus, too.
Thanks, everyone! I ended up suggesting Super Princess Peach and Mario Kart DS to them -- a lot of great suggestions, though. I didn't want to overwhelm them with choices, so I just left it to the four I mentioned with a heavy emphasis on Cooking Mama

So maybe Mario 64 DS?
no worries, that means you're the smart one

And I doubt her mother would be impressed if I were to suggest Castlevania.

Nintendogs is a really good choice.
Do it.
Bah. Castlevania's not that bad. There's nothing in there someone that age shouldn't be able to handle.
However, what you should suggest is Doki Doki Majo and and Duel Love. Those seem appropriate for 8 year old girls.
New Super Mario Bros., for sure.

Also mario kart does have single cart play, the downloaders can only play as shyguy though. Maybe only certain courses too.
I played the hell out of that when it first came out, and I must have been round the same age.
Go for one of the platformers. Also beware of underestimating her, eight year olds are far better at getting aquainted with things then you'd expect.

Yeah, I've heard that the GBA remakes of FF I and II are fairly easy. Could be good beginner RPGs.
Plus the music is great.
