Amtrak in Southern California - Need Reservations?
I live in Long Beach but am going down to San Diego tomorrow night, coming back tomorrow morning. I've got a ride down and would like to take the train back, however I don't have a good sense of whether northbound Amtrak trains leaving San Diego regularly sell out - I'd prefer to not reserve a ticket (less to worry about in terms of getting up) but more important is not having to hang out in San Diego for hours waiting for the first available train.
Anyone have any experience with this?
Should have been a rock star.

Taking Amtrak from my college town in Mn to Chicago, I'd always get tickets ahead of time, but usually because it was during the holidays. While that town wasn't very popular, the train was coming from Seattle, (Empire Builder) so some people were on it for the entire trip.
Looking at the Amtrak site shows a few seats open, but not a lot, unless I got the wrong stations. Your route?
If it's anything like the Amtrak here in upstate New York, they charge you $5-$10 more if you buy it at the station than if you buy it online (and like $5-$10 on top of that if you buy it on the train).

So yes, you may want to buy the tickets now.
