Do you feel that by playing a video game on Easy people are ultimately doing themselves a disservice and ruining the gaming experience?
Quick question. Kind of curious. I like a challenge so no easy for me.
No.
Why/how does a difficulty setting determine if a game is fun or not?
From another gamer's perspective or even a game designer's, people have different opinions of what makes a game fun.
I'll digress since we've had lectures on this, but no, it doesn't. That's the short answer.
I personally don't feel that playing games on easy ruin the experience. I play games on easy first so I can get down the game mechanics then challenge myself by playing through on a harder difficulty.

I don't really care about how other people play videogames
I mean, it doesn't affect me in any way
So let em do what they want
It's a slippery slope.
Next they're going to want to play sports on easy, and soon enough they'll be asking for easy mode in their careers!
And then they marry animals.

when I played HL2 on Hard, it made a lot of the fights more memorable, because surviving was more rewarding

On average, 80% of the games people own are never actually beaten/completed.
So if playing on easy would reduce that, I would posture that it would be better for the end user, since at least they would experience the whole game, albeit an easier path to the end.
It all depends on what is fun for you... winning or the journey itself.
To find the difficulty best suited for my own skills, I actually always start at the highest difficulty level available. If it's too hard, I do down, if it's just right, I stay there.

Personally, I typically start on normal, as that is generally the difficulty the designer sets in his/her mind as the optimal game experience. Which means it is usually the most balanced.

Because I am totally sure your mom was set on easy last night.
But really, not the right place to put this.
No.

Not because I don't want the challenge, but because I do want to enjoy the full game.

Keep it British. Poofter or bender would be more appropriate.
so is the wii thread
and the 360 thread
and the ps3 thread
and the DS thread
maybe i want to hear the opinion of SEers over GnTers
No.
I will never set a game on easy. If I see someone, playing on easy, I will ridicule them until they are a pile of shattered hopes and dreams.
Then I will set it on normal.
Then they will learn
to enjoy the pain.
Because we generally discuss things and then talk about other stuff. Also it is usually more civil.
Also we are not 90% neckbeard by volume.
because I miss nusch
the ribbon haunts my thoughts
what lies beneath? carnal knowledge
yeah, maybe if you suck
