Worthy Wii game?

I've just managed to find and buy the last Wii left in Europe. Ehem. Or so it feels. The shop had a waiting list a mile long, but apparently some fool had just come in half an hour earlier and returned one, so if I had £300 on me that VERY SECOND I could have it.

So I grabbed it. Wouldn't you?

Anyway, the reason it was £300 was that it was only available as a package deal, and so I got a few games as well. In my rush to get back to work, I picked up 4 that seemed like a good buy:

* The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
* Super Mario Galaxy
* Mario Party 8

and...

* Wing Island

Now, I got home and tried them all out - it's going to be a Christmas present, but you'd be crazy if you didn't think I was going to play the heck out of it before then - and that's when it hit me:

Wing Island sucks. It sucks like a £5 prostitute desperate for a hit, and it leaves you with the same feeling of having just touched something dirty and unclean. I'm not saying I had my Wii checked for STDs, but I made damn sure every trace of a savegame was wiped from it's so-far unblemished core. You never can be too sure.

So now I'm left with something of a dilema. I'm obviously going to return Wing Island. But what should I pick up in its place?

I want something that I can play multiplayer, with several people in the same room. I'll be picking up more Wii-motes (the other option is to return Mario Party 8), but it's not critical that you be able to play at the same time, only that several people can participate.

Any ideas?

    I would recommend WarioWare. It's fairly worthless as a 1-player game, but with 4+ people, it is an absolute blast. It basically sounds like exactly what you want.

    Agreed. 12-person multiplayer is ridiculously fun.

    Otherwise, lightgun games (Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles or Ghost Squad) are fun, and they'll have two-player co-op. I've heard decent things about Super Mario Strikers, and it has 4-player multiplayer as well as online play.

    I only rented it, so I may have forgotten, but don't you have to unlock multiplayer in WW after beating almost all the missions?

    If you have gamer friends who will get enough time to become acquainted with the game, Super Mario Strikers has excellent multiplayer.

    Metroid Prime 3 is easily the best Wii game that isn't Galaxy.

    At least until we get Z&W.

    By The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, do you mean Twilight Princess or do you mean that you bought aLttP on VC? If the latter, you should get TP.
    Metroid Prime 3 is pretty good.

    Plus it only requires one remote, as you have to pass it around the room. Although I personally find the game a blast when you're competing against someone's records in single player.

    Yes, but it's Wario Ware. It takes like two hours to "beat" it.

    If you have multiple people nearby and you're playing singleplayer by yourself, you're doing something wrong.

    Assuming the second one isn't coming out soon, you could play the first and pretend that it's actually the second and you're playing coop. Then you can go cry yourself to sleep or something.

    Alternatively, you could hand someone else the nunchuck and have them play nurse, but you'd need someone who's willing to do that. If you do, then try it out.

    If you're enjoying Mario Party 8, don't pick up 4 for the Gamecube or 2-3 if they end up on the VC, or you'll never be able to enjoy 8 again. I dunno about how 8-ruining 5 through 7 are, I never played them.

    WarioWare sounds like my best bet. If it's anything like the game for the DS, it'll be both a great introduction to the console and hours of fun. I like the sound of the multiplayer version as well.

    The lightgun games sounds cool - I'll more than likely get them, although given the usual length of lightgun games, I'll probably rent them rather than buy them. Does the controler work well without the gun attatchment, or is that a must-have?

    Trauma Center: Fresh Blood isn't out here untill next year, unfortunately. Co-op mode sounds interesting, though.

    And of course, I did mean Twilight Princess. Dunno why I said A Link to the Past. :p

    Super Mario Strikers... sounds interesting, but I don't know how much the others here are into football games. Honestly, I'm not that much into them myself. Except for Red Card. That was awesome.

    I do have one more question: There's a plethora of golf games out for the Wii... are any of them worth ditching the Wii Sports version for? Tiger Woods has a solid following in the household on the X-Box, but we're hardly married to it.

    PS. Maybe I should trade in Mario Party 8 and pick it up for the GameCube instead... I only picked it up because I had so much fun with the GC version, and 3 wiimotes is almost the price of another Wii, even without the nunchucks. :p

    Cheers!

    Strikers is awesome, dude. I usually dislike sports games myelf, and Charged was one of the reasons I got a Wii. It's seriously fun to play with other people, assuming you can tolerate the sometimes cheap tactics (Dry Bone's teleporting goal). A fist to the face usually helps.

    Think of it less like soccer (err-- futbol) and more like a chaotic collection of random violence and "WTF" that happens to resemble said footie game.

    Mario Party 8 was crap, only half of its minigames even put the Wii Remote to use! WarioWare is leaps and bounds better and should satisfy all your Wii minigame needs. Plus less wiimotes are needed.

    Anyone know anything about a decent golf game, though?

    How many Wiimotes do you need for WarioWare? Can you all share one?

    Also, which Wii games are compatible with the GC controller? Is that feature just planned for SSBB?

    Strikers is awesome multiplayer, and 4 players VS the computer in the strikers cup mode it great fun too.
    Also the best thing ever is having a character try to jump over the goalie (Peach and Toad do this I think) and having the goalie annihilate them, sending them flying through the air in slow-motion (even has the sound get lower in pitch too).

    Warioware only needs, and can only use, one remote for multiplayer I think.

    Only one controller is ever necessary for Smooth Moves' multiplayer (only one player plays at a time). There's a two-player paper airplane flying minigame that uses a remote and nunchuk for players one and two.

    There are a few Wii games that directly support the Gamecube controller. Metal Slug Anthology and some Dragonball game, if I remember. Not terribly much.

    Mario Party 8 was crap, it doesn't matter whether the games use the full functionality of the Wiimote or not, but the maps are incredibly simplistic. WarioWare is leaps and bounds better and should satisfy all your Wii minigame needs. Plus less wiimotes are needed.

    Fixed. Mario Party 8 is a lousy board game compared to others in the series. If you only care about the minigames, get a game that's actually intended to focus solely on them. Warioware is indeed a good choice.

    I've played enough Tiger Woods (not very much) to tell you that the controls aren't instantly intuitive. If you have a big group of friends who are big golf game nuts, you might be able to learn the basics and get some great mileage out of it, but it is NOT game you can just pull out with a bunch of non-gamers for the first time and get everyone having a blast, like you can with Wii Sports golf (at least in my experience).

    I know nothing about the other golf games, however.

    Thanks. I'll probably hold off on Tiger Woods - we've already got 07 for the XBox, and from the reviews I've read 08 doesn't add a whole lot. The big seller for me was the wiimote, but it sounds as if it can wait. I'll just play some Wii Golf instead.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

    I went by Gamestation today and handed back Mario Party 8 and Wing Island in return for WarioWare and Mario Strikers. The guy behind the counter gazed at me approvingly (at least I hope it was approvingly) so I figure I must have made a good move.

    Now I just have to survive untill Christmas before I actually get to play these beauties.
