Problem With DVD Playback

So I am trying to watch this DVD of Spirited Away, but it en't working. I can only even open it with VLC, and even with VLC the music comes through fine, but the voices sound like they're echoing through a tunnel or something, and they're very faint. Anyone have any ideas of what to try?
