Halo 3 Rocket Race: Oh, how I love and hate thee!

I'm completely addicted to Halo 3's Rocket Race, as I love tactical games that require good teamwork (Gears of War). However, Rocket Race has one severe flaw that absolutely destroys the point about half the time: It requires other people. When you find a good group, it's an awesome thrill ride. When you're stuck with people who just want to cause grief for other players, it's a frustrating waste of 10 minutes.

Rocket Race seems to be more subject to griefers than any gametype of any game I can recall playing online. Half the time I manage to get in a decent game, once in a while with a teammate who is decently skilled, and on rare ocassions with someone who has a mic, is friendly, and manages to either keep 2 wheels on the ground or not blow our own bike up with every other shot. However, the other half makes me want to force a RRoD on my 360. I can stand (well, sort of) getting stuck with someone who can neither drive NOR shoot, which is to be expected once in a while, as everybody was a n00b at some point. What drives me insane is hearing "nah, I don't want to race, I just wanna shoot the other guys", or getting knocked off by one of those type of people from another team as they keep melee'ing and shooting the Mongoose, never even attempting to get back into the "race". They just keep shooting the vehicles, trying to assasinate other players, and usually yelling obscenities or random "I pwnt u n00b" phrases in a pre-pubsecent voice. For crying out loud, if you don't want to race, don't join something called "Rocket Race"! A couple of my friends love the game concept as much as I do, but won't even play unless I'm with them because of the over-abundance of RR griefers.

One of 'em who's new to online gaming asked me what I meant by the term "griefer", so here's the definition I think most of us could agree on: Griefer - a player who persists playing in a manner which can gain them absolutely no in-game benefits, with the sole purpose being to derive pleasure in causing grief to other players. That being said, Rocket Race, for all it's intense action and team-play glory, is so easily deterred by these people that it makes the Rocket Stunts variation nearly impossible to play on any map, even Sandtrap.

Anybody else got the same love/hate thing goin on?

I've been playing with a variation of the gametype: Invulnerable to headshots, no unlimited ammo, Non-VIP gets a plasma pistol and gravity hammer and can NOT pick up new weapons, VIP gets rocket launcher and spartan laser, can pick up, all weapons on map replaced with rocket launcher. Negative points for kills. Trying to emphasize the race and discourage not being on the vehicle.

p.s. Rocket Race: Isolation - 2nd worst idea EVAR. 1st worse: Rocket STUNTS: Isolation.
