Fallout 2: The Moddening

I am going to replay Fallout 2, starting tonight. It's been years since the last time I played it. Looking around at (I know I know) NMA's forums reveals that some hardcore fans have made a bunch of mods/patches/addons. Some of them look promising, like killap's patch, the Unofficial Fallout 2 patch 1.051, and the Mib88 Megamod.

Problem is I have no idea if these work in concert, if they're any good, or if they're even finished. Obviously I'm not going to post in that forum, some browsing shows me that almost all new posters are told 'stfu' without any useful replies.

So what should I do to mod up my Fallout 2 game?

Forgive my shameless bump, but i am also planning on playing Fallout 2 sometime this week and would appreciate any advise on mods or patches, etc.

I'd say just use the official Fallout 2 patch, also provided by NMA's download page I believe.

While I read there are some useful changes in the unofficial ones, they also take their own interpretation of the game and how it should go. They change some damage of weapons, I believe.

Honestly, there's not much wrong with Fallout 2 in its official version.

Those who haven't played it before, PLEASE run it the official way first.

Those who have run it before but not extensively, I'd suggest instead running it a different way. The game runs very differently if you play in various ways:

    Evil rep
    Unarmed only
    No combat skills
    Explorer
Maximum followers (you can get 5 with CH 10, and then get married for 6 and Dogmeat for 7)
    IN 3 or less (hilarious)
    Porn Star!
    Childkiller (yes, cringe-inducing)

The only enemy I couldn't beat bare-handed was Horrigan. Bastard.

I can't remember if the unofficial patch does anything more than bug fixes, but if it doesn't, grab that. I ran into a bug about 70% through Fallout 2 that I couldn't fix except by using a trainer (no big deal really, but it would have been fixed from he start with the unofficial patch).

If you are playing on one of the retarded censored versions, grabbing the kiddy patch will make a few quests actually completable. Also you can, you know, stab kids in the face.

And the small fix to make AP bullets actually AP might be good, since by default the game is kinda broken in the sense that the better ammo for most guns is actually cheaper.

Yeah I ran into a child (one of the first patches... I don't think it was the latest) that would not stop attacking me for no reason, and every time I clicked on him I couldn't hit him. It was really annoying. The little bastard was throwing rocks and stuff at me... And I'm walking around with a rocket launcher like: "WTF KID?! DO YOU WANT TO GET THE SHIT BLOWN OUT OF YOU?!". The little fuck wouldn't stop though.

IIRC Dogmeat was in the first one. Wasn't it Cyberdog or something in the second?

Also, damn you OP for making me reinstall this.

You can get the robo-dog -and- Dogmeat.
One of the special random encounters is a bar that time forgot. You can recruit Dogmeat there.

Oh snap, I totally forgot about that!

I like F2, I like it a lot. But I still think F1 was better. It did a much better job of immersing me in the world, with its staggering lack of things like the above spoiler, or other world-breaking random encounters. (Seriously... a whale? WTF?)

That's why followers are handy. Sure you get a bit of a karma hit from it, but you don't get the child killer tag from Cassidy or Dogmeat putting down one of the little brats. They're not just extra hands, they're also accomplices and alibis.

Hee. The special random encounters were nearly all pop culture references.

The whale was from Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I believe there's even a potted plant nearby. The time travel to pre-FO1 Vault 13 bit (which was hilarious) was taken from the Star Trek episode "City on the Edge of Forever," I think.

The really egregious stuff was all in the special random encounters, which are by no means essential to the game, and you might only get one or two in an entire game.

And also Fallout 1 was not completely innocent of this. They had a Godzilla reference, a TARDIS sighting, and Dogmeat himself was from Mad Max.

Just a heads-up, in case anybody doesn't realise this.

The music doesn't install with the rest of the game, you have to manually copy-paste it into the right directory post-install. Makes such a difference.

Oh, and if you buy the UK White Label release? The patch that's on the disc? It's the wrong one. You don't even own the UK version of the game. Assholes!

The leather jacket too, for that matter.

Wasn't there a Jurassic Park themed special encounter in FO2?

What's it like running around with a lot of followers? Do patches fix the tendency to kill each other?

I'm thinking about making a charisma/intelligence character next time (already did sniper and unarmed) with only some basic fighting ability.

Maybe I'll cheat and set my luck to max too just for the random encounters.

Do you mean the giant lizard footprint within which was a dead body with a stealth boy on it.

I remember I once met the 4 horsemen (you know, of the apocalypse) in a random encounter. I was so fucking scared that I shut it off and haven't played since.

But really.. some experienced mod dudes should come in here and enlighten us on which mods rock, which mods fix certain annoyances, which mods suck, etc.

    I want.

Oh yeah, I know, I got (afaik) all the references, even the Unwashed Villagers one. (Which was kinda cool of them to put in the game)

My problem is that, of the 20 or so times I've played it, I never made it all the way through without something like that popping up. And it just destroys the atmosphere when you have to ask
whether the guy means an African swallow, or a European one.

    Know what I mean?

(On topic: I've never played with any of the mods)

I tried out The MIB88 Megamod but didn't like what he'd changed in Arroyo, so I doubt I'll like the rest. Instead, I'm using the unofficial 1.02.20 patch which just fixes script and item bugs, and opens some dialog that was previously hidden by bugs. Probably does some other stuff too but the changelog got tiresome to read.

no offence, but if immersion's just a self-important wank at the expense of clever intertextuality, you can count me out
