Hey guys I'm looking for a surround sound system for my hdtv and 360 and stuff. I have no real experience with this kind of stuff so I don't know how it works lol.

This is the tv I have
http://www.amazon.com/Magnavox-37MF231D-37-Widescreen-HDTV/dp/tech-data/B000GZS7SQ/ref=de_a_smtd?ie=UTF8&qid=1196668548&sr=8-1
It has 1 SPDIF slot which is how you hook up the speakers I guess @_@.

These are the speakers I was looking at
http://www.buy.com/prod/pioneer-hts-gs1-5-1-surround-sound-speaker-system-designed-for-xbox/q/loc/111/204509050.html

My question is do you just hook up the speakers to your tv and everything hooked to your tv will use the surround sound (just like speakers to a computer). Or do you have to plug anything into the sound system individually for it to work. I really don't know what I am talking about lol.

Any suggestions or help would be great =\ thanks.

Thanks for that mcdermott, my budget is like 250 or less. I haven't worked since the summer because of class so I'm a little low on cash =p

Then honestly, I wouldn't consider getting a surround system. For ~$400 you could probably swing something decent. I say this because to make it a worthy investment for a home theatre setup, you are going to want a reciever (Onkyo is a great brand with very good prices for what they offer) that has HDMI inputs (HDMI pass through would be nice, this means you only need one cable from reciever to TV), and you're going to need 5 speakers and a subwoofer. Don't worry about a 7.1 setup, but having that option in your system might be nice. Your call.

The set up you looked at is happily selling for £200 ($400) on other sites. Seems a complete bargain. It's cheaper than most decent stereo speaker sets.

I think I will just try the set for 99 bucks for now. I'm not really looking for anything amazing just something to replace the 10 watt speakers that are on my tv. Thanks for all the replies D:
