X360: Will vertical standing screw up my gaimz?[Solved]

So, I just got a 360. And I bought spur of the moment because I am a giant pansy and could not wait for some stupid FALCON to come flying into the store. They only had one left of the 360 pros with two games, so I swooped.

So. I am really afraid of it getting the red ring of death. After hearing about how people talk about keeping it cool, it seems to me that keeping it vertical would provide good air flow as opposed to putting an unsightly wire rack beneath it. Am I mistaken in this thought?

Also, if it is vertical, will it suffer the old problems of scratching disks like the PS2 did? I do not want my precious skate and dead rising to be TARNISHED.

Thanks.

It ought to be okay as long as it doesn't fall over. My stance has always been that the whole vertical console thing is a bit of a marketing gimmick, but it was at least partially designed to stand that way, so...

From everything that I've read, neither method has any effect on preventing red rings, but vertical is more likely to cause issues with disk read errors (especially if you accidentally knock it while it's reading), so if you have no real preference you might as well just keep it horizontal

and my 360 worked fine during the entire summer and then red ringed when my apt was like 50 degrees last week (possibly exaggerating, but it was probably low to mid 60's), so the truth is that it's more a random thing than anything else - if it's going to have overheating issues, it's going to have them regardless of what you try to do short of ripping apart and replacing the cooling system, and you might as well get them over with so you can get a new (hopefully fixed) 360

So should I invest in one of those cooling systems they have at best buy and stuff? looks like some sort of clip on thing. Anyone have experience with those?

No. Intercoolers cause more harm than they prevent.

The newer systems should be fine. They do have better insides than the old ones.

Newer ones as in the ones with the better processor. If your system has the 175w power supply, it's guaranteed to be the new chip. I know there's some rigamarole you can go through to determine whether the 200+w one has the new chip, but I honestly don't remember what it was.

Honestly if you just bought it it should be fine. Try playing games for a few hours and feel it to see how hot it is. Mine (which I bought in October) runs nice and cool even after having something like Halo 3 in it for a while. I don't think heating is really a problem anymore. (I run in horizontal)

How "Hot" am I looking for? I played it a few hours when i first got it, and felt the console and the powersupply, and it was warm, but wasn't what I would call "hot."

It'll be fine. Just enjoy the console, and don't do anything that will void your 3 year warranty (like attaching an intercooler). For reference, I run mine horizontally, and have been for almost two years without any problems. It's sitting on wood, and there's plenty of unoccupied space all around it (front, back, sides, top).

Of course, now that I've typed this, I'll probably have to send it in for repair.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?
