Or: That is a great place for a bus stop God damn it.

So recently I decided I didn't like talking to people and started playing Sim City 4 again. I had kind of forgotten how much I loved this game. I am also confused and frightened by the changes in Sim City Societies so I'll just act like that doesn't exist. I also don't own the expansion pack, but I would if I could find it.

I also kind of forgot how to play, but more on that later.

Sim City 4 is a fantabulous game that involves you building cities in a region, and trying to keep your Sims happy. Or at least keep them from rioting. Also it is good to make money.

region2.jpg
This is the default region. You can see my cities in it!

From this region, you select one of the plots. There's a bunch. You are given $100,000. And then you start making things!

Most of the time, you don't actually build the buildings. Instead, you zone areas of land for development. You can make residential, commercial, and industrial zones. The zones come in light, medium, and dense. That determines how big the buildings can be in the zone. For instance, light residential can only have houses. Medium can have apartment buildings, and dense can have massive apartment buildings.

Once you make the zones, the Sims will build things there, like houses or offices or industrial buildings or apartments or research labs or small stores or etc etc. There is a bunch of stuff that can show up. And it all looks very pretty.

For instance:
upclose.jpg

However, you have to actually build some buildings. Things like power plants, police stations, schools, libraries, parks, and so on are built by you, and paid for by you. The paying part is tricky.

After a little bit of building and taxing the hell out of people, your fledgling city may look something like this:
smallcity.jpg

You may notice a road going off to nowhere. That road leads to another city! In this game, each of your cities can affect its neighbors if you want. In order to make really big cities, you pretty much have to build up the cities around it. The cities can buy and sell services to each other, such as water, power, and garbage space. Also, the neighbors can affect the demand for things in each city.

After a while, you might have a city that looks like this:
establishment.jpg

Hopefully however, your city won't be dead ass broke like mine is.

This is where I kind of forgot how to play. I've been having some budget management issues, and also power issues, and also development issues, and tax issues.

This game is kind of hard. But its very rewarding!

Plus if your sims don't do what you want, you can always RAIN CHAOS DOWN FROM THE HEAVENS

I usually go back to this and make a couple of cities every few months or so. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get my citizens to build up, only out, and I fill up a plot with middle-class and get no more development. Then I get mad and go play an FPS.

Ah SimCity 4, you lovely little bitch.

The thing that threw me off about SimCity 4 at first was how the focus changed. In the first three SC games, your basic play cycle went like this: get money, build shit, zone shit, wait until you generate more money, repeat until you run out of room. Simple. You could go the whole game without, for instance, opening your budget details outside of simple tax rate.

In SimCity 4, it's a bit different. You basically need to micromanage your budget to stay in the black. That's pretty much it. Stay in the black and you can do anything you want. Stay in the red and even the largest surplus you've been saving up will vanish before you know it. Play around with school, police, fire, and hospital radiuses, play around with tax rates, play around with anything you can change. It's nice.

I kind of prefer the SC4 way, as it lets me build a successful city even at small sizes.

I'm a chicken and refuse to let disasters affect any of my cities. I got a Sim City 2k game to go to colonization though. I'm not sure how those sentences are connected.

The xpack for this game didn't add much for me. Basic SC4 is great, even if I get tired of trying to keep track of so many damn cities.

Oh, and mods are awesome. I forget all the site URLs, though; it's been a long time. But there were new buildings, a major revamped road system (required, and built heavily upon, Rush Hour), and some other stuff.

Yeah, the modding community for SC4 is pretty big and intimidating at first. I messed around with a few of the transportation mods, but always got sidetracked before I could get a real feel for how they changed things.

I cannot for the life of me make a good mass transit system. Luckily I don't think I've ever really needed it but still it makes me angry.

I don't suppose Rush Hour might still show up in an EBStop somewhere?

Only as part of the SimCity 4 Ultimate bundle, I believe.

When I was a little kid I had SimCity 2000 and it came with these two other games, SimCopter and some Sim racing game that let you fly and drive through your built cities. This blew my little 12 year old mind. Why the hell haven't they made updated versions for the new SimCity games?

I've been playing SimCity regularly since SC2000. I actually got hooked on that with some friends at my elementary school. We were actually encouraged to play the game!

Picked up a copy of the CD-enhanced SimCity Original after that and never looked back. I've bought every iteration of the game day one, more or less. SC3000 and Ultimate were probably my favorites, with the non-ultimate version getting the edge for better music track selection.

SC4 was pretty great, I haven't played it in a while. I just started playing Societies, which I find surprisingly enjoyable.

My biggest problem has always been maintaining a balance between taxing and city growth such that I don't go broke. I don't have the patience to wait for all the taxes to come in. :)

Shitty, shitty game - but awesome music.

I'm just a splatter, splatter, splatter, on the windshield of life...

I like Simcity 4, though I haven't played it nearly as much as 3. Definitely a steeper learning curve, though I do thoroughly enjoy the new traffic options and details.

SC4 is an awesome game. Incredibly complex systems that take a long time to learn, but once you do you can start building really good cities. Its so awesome when your income is greater than your outcome by almost $2000 and you have no police stations, but your education level is like 160. Love this game so much.

The only mass transit I was ever able to effectively employ were freight and passenger trains.

Some of the cities people make with modded versions of this game astound me.

    This thread, for instance! Yeesh.

    Or better: Wowzers.

But the amount of effort to get that far would probably require too much dedication.

I enjoyed the hell out of Simcity 2000 back on my 486. I enjoyed the hell out of Simcity 3000 on my AMD K6-2 380mhz machine.

Alas, I've never had enough computer to run Simcity 4 properly, so it remains unplayed.

However, will be buying Simcity DS soon.

Nice topic; I had been thinking about pulling this out again.

I haven't ever fooled with the mods. Those of you who are suggesting finding a pathfinding mod (or any other mod); it seems like there are a few options out there. Please name or link to the one you use or recommend.

If you do that, I'll stop at the store and pick up a new copy of Rush Hour. Deal?

Well, I guess for $10... But:

    - Too easy to remain in the black
    - Very limited amount of buildings so all your city looks the same regardless of how high-density/high-value some areas become (no high-rises)
    - CONSTANT interruptions from citizens and advisors asking for More Stadiums/More Marinas/More Hospitals ad infinitum. The game doesn't tell you when something interesting/important/different is demanding a meeting with you, so either you check all of these fucking annoying things, or possibly miss out on a deal for a casino or whatever.
    - No subways or highways.
    - 'Dialog' types out in a tedious fashion (instead of popping up instantly), requiring several irritating clicks to get back to playing the game.
    - 20 years I had a ridiculous amount of money in the bank and couldn't spend it fast enough. No challenge.
    - You can only save one city.

The key is to find your "city center" and start zoning high-density stuff there. Basically use the demand overlay to find out where a good place for downtown is, and build it there. Just takes a little planning.

Though it's nearly impossible to get anything more than "medium" sized buildings (5 stories or so) without having well-developed suburbs in neighboring cities. You simply cannot generate the kind of demand necessary, even on a large map.

I did that though, that was why I got so confused. I tracked property value and demand pretty heavily and always zoned accordingly, but the city just got stagnant.

I guess your second part was my problem then. I got a few high rise apartment buildings (5-8 stories), but I couldn't get any high-end commercial properties. I guess that was because I always play pretty isolationist. Coming from SC2/3000, I adapted very well to the new financial model, but I never really got the hang of using neighbors effectively. I tried looking for tips on fansites, but that was like asking Elmore Leonard to punch up a limerick for me.

Damn you SimCity, give me my skyscrapers!

One thing I really hated about this game was the auto-roads. I like laying my roads the way I want them... I find myself constantly tearing down the auto-roads to build roads the way I want them... which wastes more money...

I recall 3000 annoying the hell out of you with constant advisers, citizens and entrepreneurs bugging you about shit. Build a casino, and you get bitched out by the NIMBY citizens. Take it down, and other people tell you how it hurts the bottom line. 3000 does get points for having one awesome song.

    I don't know... i haven't played it. ;-)

If I feel the urge to play SimCity, I just play SC2K. It's damn-near perfect.

I've been playing it on and off for 14 years, and I'm still not sick of it. I've even got a version that runs on my PDA.

I guess I just never saw the need to "upgrade" to SC3K or SC4 (especially after the mixed reviews for both).
