I generally run things on a budget, but now and then I get a chance to snap up something I consider pricey. Be it the laptop I'm currently using, or my PSP, I acquire such things gradually over a few years.
This year I've managed to sort out a 360. Assuming I have the Premium model, what are my best options with the following available:
A Large (enough), regular TV that does not support 60hz
A laptop with VGA support and a 16" LCD
Possibility of borrowing a TV of a similar size that supports 60hz
The idea of purchasing a second-hand Tv very cheaply from somewhere (£40-60)
I ask because most games carry a '60hz' symbol on the cover. I definitely won't be buying a HD tv for a while.
To clarify: is the 16" LCD the one on the laptop, or is an external monitor you hook up to via VGA? If it's the latter, just buying a 360 VGA cable is the cheapest way to play in HD.
Oh, it's the laptop's screen. If it helps, it is an XP media center machine, with the VGA port and stuff.
I came across some forums, with similar questions. Some people there seemed to think that most TV's will support 60hz for the 360. My PS2 games that have the option to switch from 50 to 60 (like Devil May cry 3) are output in black and white, but it was also mentioned that this is specifically due to the ps2/cables. Obviously I can't test on my TV until I get the 360, but is this plausible?
Actually, since it is a Media Center PC, there's a good chance your laptop came with a USB doohickey that should allow you to hook up your 360 via composite or maybe even component. However, since it's designed for just video usage and not gaming, the lag is probably going to be so horrendous it's not even worthwhile.
The best thing to do is see if you can swing getting a monitor that supports both VGA and DVI connections. Then you can use it for both the 360 and the lappy. (This is how I had my Elite hooked up prior to getting an HDTV.) Just be aware that you'll need an HDMI-DVI cable/adaptor, preferably one that splits out the audio.
