Whiplash

Hey, a friend of mine just got into a relatively serious car accident.

She wasn't really injured, but she is suffering from whiplash.

Should she go to a doctor for it? What can she do to relieve the pain?

Go to doctor. Doctor will prescribe pain medication and look for serious damage. Just wait until after the Doctor looks at her to spill the beans about the car accident (unless he/she asks). Sometimes when Doctors hear the word car accident they think a person is just looking for a law suit and downplay their symptoms. Stupid I know, but this happed to someone I know (my aunt).

Take an OTC pain reliever. I'd recommend Naproxen (Aleve).

Does whiplash have any long term effects?

You don't even know if it is whiplash, thats what a doctor is for. Right now all you know is that she has pain in her neck. That could be a whole lot of things.

If the problem is that she can't afford to go to a doctor, it's covered by her auto insurance, or the auto insurance of the person driving the car she was in (they'll get their money from the other company if it was the other person's fault).
