Old school pokemon help

So I've just learned that when searching for 'pokemon', basically every thread ever comes up.

I'm looking for a gift for the gf for Christmas and need a bit of help. I'd like to get her a gameboy game, and I'm thinking Pokemon fits the bill. However I'm broke, and she has a GBA (no fancy DS or anything). What's the best version to introduce her to the series?

Background on the gf: she absolutely loves WoW. Plays a NElf Hunter (shaddap) which makes me think Pokemon might be interesting for her with the collecting cute cuddlies. However she often proclaims the RPG's I play to be 'boring and terribly uninteresting' making me question the Pokemon idea.

I'm open to other game suggestions as well. Everything around here is DS oriented, so it's hard to lurk for advice on the older generations. And perhaps it may spur some discussion on old forgotten favorites that you lucky DS owners can play.

Best version would be Fire Red or Leaf Green. GBA Remakes of the originals with a few extras.

If she's never played Pokemon then any version is a good place to start.
Emerald is the most recent one on the GBA so I'll suggest that one.
But obviously, getting a DS is the greatest gift of all. It plays GBA games.
