Burnout Paradise
What is it?
Newest in the Burnout series, Burnout Paradise takes the series into an open-world environment, the fictional Paradise City.
Tell me EA is shafting the Nintendo console owners again with burnout..............
I hate EA..
Well... the game is focused on a 'jump-in' multi-player, as well as stunning graphics, two things that wouldn't translate well if this game was ported to the Wii.
Anyway, I'm very much looking forward to this game, I'll be downloading the demo right away.
I think the Wii could do the multiplayer if they just threw friend codes out the window.. We don't know that Nintendo requires them of third parties..
As for the graphics, the Wii is decently powerful. Game companies always had to port stuff down for the PS2 which never seemed to be a problem. They have no excuse when the Wii is becoming the top seller.
I'm just still ticked from the lack of 3 after enjoying the first two on GC..
I dont get how it's played. Is it like Need For Speed Most Wanted where you can drive around a town and then hit markers stating a closed area race or is it like how I hear Midnight Club is where you just get to the finish line any way you can?
Burnout 3 was my first and that was gods game which he shared with us. I call him Gamezorz! Revenge's only cool thing was its car designs although I liked legends a bit.
Yeah I wasn't a big fan of Revenge either. The whole traffic-checking concept turned the usual white-knuckled incoming driving into regular colour-knuckle incoming driving plus annoyance.
Still played the crap out of it though, just nowhere near as much as 3 or Legends/Dominator on the PSP.
Couple this with the impending release of GT5P and I've got more than enough reason to fork out for a G25 (or the newer wheel theyre bound to release with GT5)
I'm with the above posters, I just don't see this game working on the Wii.
it relies on sharp control and crashes. The first wouldn't work because the Wiimote, awesome as it is, is simply not precise enough on the tilt to work well for Burnout style racing.
For the crashes, its an issue of power. Burnout relies on large numbers of physics objects, deformations of the vehicles/objects involved, and lots of debris. Even without a high texture resolution or polycount, these aspects of the game can tax a system.

They could, you know, use the nunchuck's stick for steering. Or even provide both control methods as options.
As for physics, if the original XBox can run Half Life 2, the Wii can run this.
Would it be the exact same game? No. At least the visuals would be different.
Still, getting nothing is an insult.

Throw me in the same boat. Revenge was fun, but it just wasn't as great as 3.

It sounds like there are designated end points, and you just kinda pull up to some other cars, challenge them to a race, and choose a finish line. Then, you get there however you can. There's an interview with one of the devs in this week's Major Nelson podcast.
I realize I'm in the minority, but I'll take a new Burnout over Forza or PGR any day. I'm amazingly stoked for this, although I'm still not 100 percent sold on the sandbox-y nature of it all. Still, it sounds awesome and the new Crash Junction mode reminds me of the freedom of making your own stunt vids in Skate., only with flaming heaps of metal screaming past you at 150 mph.
Although I still haven't really finished half of Burnout Revenge. Oh, and if forum buzz on GAF is correct, traffic checking is both seriously minimized and also can be removed entirely by a menu option. The only part of Revenge I'm not crazy about.
Burnout is some of the most fun I've ever had. Passing the sticks on crash mode is the absolute shit. EVERYONE I've ever hung out with has been able to play it. Ex girlfriends, my dad, friends who just don't play videogames, etc. That's good news.
I realize I'm in the minority, but I'll take a new Burnout over Forza or PGR any day.
Speaking as a diehard Forza/PGR fan, I've read enough to guess that you're not in anything even close to a minority. I always got the impression that the general gamer populace anointed Burnout the New Hotness long ago with its easy-to-play mechanics ("Automatic or Manual? I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS") and its wicked radicool explosionations, while sims and technique/drifting-oriented titles like PGR could piss up a rope. Me, I always wind up buying Burnout games, enjoying them for a week and a half and then finding out that the AI is complete bullshit (Burnout 3) or the cars all handle identically and don't require much skill to drive outside dodging things (Revenge).
Still, I'm optimistic for Paradise since it looks sickeningly good graphically and maybe the open-world format will help cure some of the series' encroaching staleness. So long as the cars handle uniquely and the open-world format works on a similar level as Test Drive Unlimited or Midnight Club 3, I could see myself enjoying this, especially if it's coming out in the middle of what looks to be a decent-sized gaming drought for the 360. (On the other hand, speaking of Midnight Club, MCR: Los Angeles looks to be doing something really similar -- one preview actually compared its crashes to Burnout -- and does it with real-world, customizable cars, day-night cycles and weather effects. So I'm a bit more geeked for that.)

Yup, that's me to a tee, actually. I like my racers arcadey, loose and blazingly fast -- why I like Excite Truck too. I don't play a lot of racing games and the ones I do tend to be more of the pick-up-and-play variety.
I'm with Stupornaut, except for anything involving "drifting".
Burnout 2 was the last one in the series that I actually enjoyed. I'm kind of a nerd for licensed cars, so my relationship has always been kind of shaky with Burnout anyhow. I'll probably end up picking this one up because of the open world thing (I too had a really great time with TDU), and the fact that there are no other racing games coming up that have me excited.
On an off-topic note, GT5 will be the reason I buy a PS3, but there isn't a doubt in my mind that's it's a LONG way off.
^ If Burnout 2 is your cup of tea, you should definitely check out Burnout Dominator either on the PS2 or PSP, both good Its a great tip of the hat to fans of old skool Burnout.
You know what I want? Customizable controls. I fucking hate the trend that Xbox brought on with the R trigger being accelerate, and you couldn't change this in Burnout Revenge. It ruined the game for me, essentially. Tell me Paradise has customizable controls and I'm sold.
I loved Burnout 3, and though I liked a lot about Revenge (even the traffic checking, at first), it got stale far faster than did B3. I think, at least partially, I disliked the Crash mode in Revenge more than 3's version.
Looking forward to this demo, though the layout they're noting has me a bit skeptical.

The Crash mode for Paradise is intriguing -- there are no set locations. You can apparently just trigger them anywhere in the city that you want, so part of the challenge is finding the right spot to crash.
I'm not sure how I feel about the sandbox-y nature of the game either, Evander. I normally don't like the faffing about of open-roam games like GTA, but on the other hand it'll be a nice approach as opposed to the siloed menu approach to races. I never did play TDU, mostly because people said the handling was really clunky.
If the single-player is on par with Burnout 3, I'll get this on PS3 just for the pretty. If it plays too much like that other Burnout game, I may pass on it, regardless of the crazy grafx.
I can understand them shafting the Wii on this. Burnout 3 not coming out on Gamecube back in the day? That was fucking criminal. There was absolutely no reason for the to ignore the Cube audience. (Weren't the Cube versions of Burnout 1&2 pretty damn good to begin with?) I think their excuse was that since BO3 was online, it wouldn't have made sense to release it without online features on the Cube. Really EA? Really? So why did you still release your entire sports lineup, without online multiplayer, on the XBox back when you and Microsoft couldn't come to an agreement on Live?
They should just port Burnout 3 to the Wii, add friend codes and waggle, and call it a day.
I'm also a little unsure of the sandbox stuff. I'm personally not a big fan of that stuff. I hope there is a world map in the start menu and you can select specific races and events and just "warp" there, kinda like Skate.
I think I may pick this up, despite my burning dislike for the old Burnouts. While I loved the crash modes, I despised the racing, but I think the sandboxy-ness may offset that, and make it enjoyable for me.
Just a quick bump to remind people. If the countdown timer is right, we will be seeing the demo at midnight EST.
Edit: Or not...website now says "Demo avaliable for download from the PlayStation® Network, PlayStation® Store and Xbox Live® Marketplace starting 8am PST Dec 13th."

Where does it mention 8am? I don't see it anywhere on the site.
Read some hands-on oer at GAF that said crash mode was kinda crap now. God I hope that's wrong. Crash mode was decided worse in revenge then 3 though
I did read rumours that they were thinking of making a wii burnout, but that it'd be a port of burnout dominator. Wasn't a bad bunrout, but no crash mode? Heresy! Make it dominator with the extra PSP levels and crash junctions included and maybe we'll have something.
edit: neogaf says it's up for xbox live now, but not yet on PSN.
I really enjoyed Burnout 3 crash mode, there was a sort of puzzle element involved in trying to hit all the good power ups whilst missing the bad. Burnout 4 was dire with the crash mode and the "golf-esque" system of starting the car. The 360 fixed this but it still wasn't quite as fun as Burnout 3
Anyone else played the demo yet? I'm excited about getting home and downloading it, so need to quench my thirst for info till then! I really want to know more about the Showtime (ie Crash) thing aswell... I've heard conflicting reports about how good/bad it is.
You can no longer check traffic at high speeds otherwise you will get wrecked. I haven't found the Showtime yet, but racing/burning route is fun as hell. The problem with the demo is it's too damn small and if you do happen to mess up an event, you need to drive all the way back to the starting point. I didn't see anything that says I could instantly retry.
The wrecks are amazing though. No longer can you just simply tap a guy and watch them do 50 barrel rolls in the air. You really need to put an effort into making a sick takedown.
This is definitely a different game from the rest of the series. It just annoys me that I need to wait for more things to do because the demo is so limited.

This is going to be awesome. With all the games that have been delayed to early 08, it looks like Christmas Lite.
EA has been doing really good with demos on the 360 so far. I love it.

I DO NOT want sandboxing in a racing game.
why the fuck not?
That stuff gets everywhere.
A definite post X-mas buy.

What do you mean "annoying"?
