Ipod Extracting software

Is there a way to copy songs off an ipod back onto a computer? I've scoured the internet... but all I can find are programs that allow you 10 or so songs to copy... then you need to purchase the program. All the articles on gizmodo and engadget are from 2005, and they're talking about previous itunes software. If anyone's used a free-ware type program with success, let me know.

If you are using windows, can you not just turn off hidden folders and manually copy the files from the ipod to your hard drive anymore? I've done this several times, but not recently and with an old 20 gig second (or whatever) gen ipod.

The files are all named with cryptic filenames like 2X3C.mp3, and that sucks. Efpod reads the database on the ipod, copies the files off, then renames them.

After extracting the files that way, you can drag them into your iTunes library and it will rename them for you. Before I got that trick, I downloaded the trial version of Media Widget which lasts for two weeks, not ten songs. It also lets you mess with the iPod's settings without going into iTunes first (like turning off automatic syncing).
