Please read the link to the following EVE forum post. The Trinity expansion is killing WINDOWS XP INSTALLS. This has been confirmed by CCP and they are working on a fix.

This has to be deliberate sabotage. Accidentally picking just that file to kill? I doubt CCP has that much incompetence.

I saw somewhere that for whatever reason there's an EVE file named boot.ini. It's apparenlty always been there. But with this update, someone forgot to put the path on it (left out the variable I imagine).

Why they would have a file with the same name as an important file, I have no clue.

And another question, why would Windows let the file be overwritten? Should it be locked or something?

Yep, the premium client installer is overwriting boot.ini, which will prevent your system from rebooting. See the second post of the G&T Eve thread for instructions on how to prevent or correct the problem.

OK, massive dumbass screwup by CCP, yeah. But what I want to know is:

EVE Classic? EVE Premium? Huh? Is there some new tiered payment system now? Or did they just name the fancy new graphics engine Premium because they are tin-eared when it comes to marketing?

The issue is, EVE has its own boot.ini for determining what graphics options to use and whatnot. The installer is supposed to delete the old version of EVE's boot.ini but someone messed up the command line and welp.

Eve Premium is just an extra download, like High Res textures for everything. It's free, after you install the game it will have the option to download the premium content.

Calling it premium was silly, it makes it sound like it requires an extra cost.

They do. Rather than use normal file paths like C:\Program Files\blahblah\boot.ini, they set the current directory to the EVE directory and then use relative paths. Except on boot.ini, there was an extra slash before the path.

Testers like to test with strange configurations, to trip up lazy programmers using hard-coded paths. If they tested using a non-boot drive, this problem wouldn't have been obvious.

Wow. There is literally no reason whatsoever that any game install should lay a finger on boot.ini. Hell, I don't know what would be worse - a rogue developer getting away with a malicious attack in the install, or a retarded developer deciding to replace boot.ini for whatever reason and then horribly fucking it up.

I'm not trying to excuse what they did, just offer a possible explanation for how you can write a patcher that deletes vital OS boot files.

In a way this is all deeply funny, a few years ago I tried Eve but just couldn't find myself getting into it. It was originally sold to me (by a friend) as a multiplayer Elite, you can imagine my disappointment.

In the last month or two i'd been thinking of giving it another go since it's been a few years and they may have fixed the niggles that I had. But then this comes out. I can't help and sit back laughing that the decision I made was somehow the best one to take.

Of course, it's not funny to those who've had their boot.ini's deleted.

the best part is that a tester saw the problem 2 days before the launch, and posted the issue on the forums

I dunno, AC2 fucked up pretty bad when they KILLED THEIR ENTIRE GAME in one patch. At least the boot.ini thing is fixable, and the game content will still be there after fixing it.
