Really, really late car registration

Alright, so here's the deal, and before anything is said, I'm perfectly aware that I'm an idiot. I bought a new vehicle in 2005. My tag for my previous vehicle expired in 2006, early in 2006. Now I honestly thought I transferred the tag from one vehicle to the other, but apparently I didn't. I know this because, after having some financial problems that I'm now coming back from, I never got around to renewing the tag. I was pulled over earlier in the year, but since I have full insurance on the vehicle, and proof of ownership of both the new vehicle and the previous one, (I carried all of my paperwork with me in case I got stopped afte the tag expired) the officer just let me go with an expired tag fee, which was cheap. I really need to get this tag taken care of, and it's the first thing I'm going to do after the new year. (I'm currently not in town.)

I guess my questions are what kind of fee should I be expecting? I know I don't need to use the same tag and transfer it, because it's been two years. I need to just freshly register the vehicle and get a new tag, but I just need some kind of idea as to what it's going to cost. Anyone else had a similar experience with this?

I'm curious on this too amateurhour. I got my tags for my car, and they expired in Jan 07. I've yet to get them... I decided I might as well wait till Jan 08.

It'll vary by state. Check your state's DMV website?

Well on my late payment California notice after four months from due date the normal price goes up about $50 and doesn't add any more to the price with final late date on.

Yeah, I guess I can say it, but I'm in Alabama, and I think the fine for just being late is like $30. There didn't seem to be any additional fees. Would I just pay the taxes (I guess roughly $200) for the one time registration, or would I have to pay them for both years? I don't see why I would since renewing a tag is only like $35 here, but I'm not sure. I just hate to call the DMV, and our state doesn't have the best internet info on this stuff.

What happens if you buy a car and store it for two years? I am pretty sure you don't have to register it if it is not on the road. I'm not suggesting you lie or anything, just curious...

In which situations does the State of Alabama charge a delinquent penalty for the registration of a motor vehicle?

A penalty of $15.00 is assessed for anyone who is:

    * Delinquent in registering newly acquired vehicles.
    * Anyone failing to timely transfer a valid license plate to a newly acquired vehicle.
    * Anyone failing to renew in his or her designated renewal month.
    * Anyone moving to Alabama who fails to register his or her vehicle in Alabama within 30 days from the date they enter the State of Alabama.
    * In addition to penalties being assessed, interest charges accrue on the 21st day after the purchase or acquisition date of the vehicle.
There's an e-mail address at the bottom to get anything you need clarified.

It's MUCH, MUCH cheaper then the fee for driving with expired tags... while most judges will waive it at court, the fee itself is typically in the 500-800 dollar range. At least it was in AZ.

You're just registering the car, not buying it again so I'd assume they'll just charge you a standard registration fee of around $50.

sweet... SO I could theoretically get out of this for under a hundred dollars? And here it's been two years that I've been putting it off because I thought it would cost like $500 or more, and it already cost me a $90 ticket... I'm kind of retarded...

Yeah, most states are smart enough to realize that charging a huge fee for people that register late is a great way to make sure they never register.

Protip: See if you can register for two years. If you plan on keeping the car it's usually an option and you might save $5 or $10.

Haha. I sent an email to my BMV asking the question, this is the response I got:
This is in response to your email to the registrar.

Ohio does not charge any late fees or penalties for late registrations. You will be required to pay the registration fee for the 2007 - 2008 period along with the 2008 - 2009 period.

Thank you for your email to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

    Sweet!

Yeah, that's what I think I'm going to have to do, so it will be like $40 for each year, plus the $15
