Media sharing with Xbox 360

I'm guessing you've seen a million of these things by now, which is probably why it's so hard to track down an existing thread that already solves my problem. Sorry.

Anyway, I'm trying to set up a very basic direct connection from my 360 to a laptop using an ethernet cable to be used entirely for temporary media sharing. No internet connection needed. For some reason, the two systems will not communicate. The media connection test fails at the IP address. I gave the PC a static IP address, and used this as the 360's gateway. There is no firewall running and I disabled the wireless network. What am I doing wrong?

There was something important here. It's gone now.

If there's no router between them, you need a crossover cable, not a standard 'straight through' ethernet cable.

Shouldn't be causing a problem but you shouldn't need a gateway when connecting 2 devices as such... unless the 360 is requiring one.

The 360's ethernettery is good enough to work with both a crossover and a straight-through. However, in order for media sharing to work properly with a PC, you'll need to be running WMP11 or the Zune software on the PC at the time, with the files in the Library and all the appropriate settings for sharing to a 360 on.
