Wireless woes

So, I recently bought a Zyxel Zyair g-220 wireless adapter/soft access point. I'm trying to get my wired desktop PC to provide wireless internet around the house (mainly to my laptop). I'm at the point where my laptop can connect to this software AP, but I get no internet. If I set my desktop's LAN connection to "shared", I get no internet over wireless and my desktop internet stops working. The same thing happens if I select the wireless/wired connections on my desktop and bridge them.

I'm also not sure which IP settings I need to be changing, but it's a moot point at the moment since nothing works at all if I try to share the connection. I should mention that using the wizard produces the same effect. Can anyone offer any advice?

Edit: I'm using ZoneAlarm for my firewall, but it doesn't seem to be the problem. Turning it off doesn't help, and it should be configured to accept the connections anyway.

Do you have a regular router connecting your computer to the internet?

No. My desktop is plugged directly into the DSL modem.

Offtopic, but not a good idea. Get a router or at least firewall software.
