Broken Xbox 360, What Should I Do?

Two or three days ago, I turned on my Xbox and played a few rounds of Call of Duty 4. Then, white lines appeared running up and down the screen. The xbox screeched, making a sound that no machine thats working properly ever should. Then, i examined the disc and although im not sure that they were there before, I'm pretty sure that there were vertical scratches on the disc because of this. It didn't scratch any of the other games I put in, but it does freeze my xbox and makes it unplayable. Should I've heard that if I induce the "red ring of death" then I could get it fixed free... I just want to know what to do to get it fixed before christmas, when I wil be getting Mass Effect and Rock Band and other oodles of video game goodies.

Not to be a cynic but kiss Christmas goodbye. Will take at least 3 weeks to get back if you send it off. The RRoD ruined my wedding and summer.

yeah....big fat internet nerd right here. You don't have to say it.

Make sure that they transfer your hardware serial number to all downloadable content you purchased if they replace it.

It's got a great software library. Can't fault a guy for taking his commitment to the next level.

Man, what? 3 weeks? The last time I've sent out my 360 for repairs, I've been without it for about 3 days.
    How's that for service?

This is VERY important if you have purchased anything off of the Xbox Live Marketplace. Include a note with your 360 when you pack it in the coffin box that says something along the lines of "If you determine that my console needs to be replaced rather than repaired, please remember to transfer the licenses for the premium content that I have purchased to the replacement console before sending it back to me." I have heard that some people have had luck getting replacement consoles with their original licenses intact by including a note in the coffin box with their broken 360s.

Support should be getting better at just knowing to do this already, but leaving notes like that definately doesn't hurt.

If you do run into any problems, PM me and I can try to help you out.
