Oh yeah, I finally watched Pirates 3 last night. It was a lot better than I was expecting, judging from the trailers they were showing. I kinda like how they took Will Turner onto a darker path, but then nothing meaningful ever really came of it, so that was kinda :-|. Did anyone else think it was kinda racy and violent for a Disney movie? I mean the beginning of the last scene with Elizabeth and Will on the beach was a little... too mature for kids, wasn't it?
That's a really good list (although it's the Thin Red Line - the Blue Line is about cops). I can only think of a few things to add to it - Grand Illusion, M*A*S*H, The Sand Pebbles, Patton, Das Boot, From Here to Eternity, and Sands of Iwo Jima.
Ah yes, that's what I get for looking at Errol Morris films a couple days back. And I'm unsure of how I forgot to include Patton. Quite good.

Yeah, that and the jokes in Singapore about Elizabeth undressing and the pirates looking up her skirt and all, it was a bit more than I would have expected. Overall though, I had just as much fun during this one as I did in the first two, fuck all the haters.

Kids were sobbing their eyes out when they saw all the coral monsters.
That wasn't such a kids series since the second movie began.

Talk about Patton and Apocalypse Now and you can say how they had the first two actors to ever refuse an Academy Award.
(George C Scott for Patton, Marlon Brando for Godfather)

I should probably see that one. I didn't care for the second much though.

Yeah, but the second movie didn't have any sexy stuff in it, and I thought it mostly conformed to this whole "Family values" thing that seems to be a big issue, but the third movie didn't seem to give a shit. Not that I really care, but I'm just surprised that Disney ok'd it.
And yeah, I totally loved the third movie, and I'm really glad I bought it. Though I wish my faith hadn't been so weak, and I'd just gone to see it in theatres, because, as nice as a 1080i 42" LCD is, it just can't compare to a movie screen that takes up your entire field of vision.
God damn it guys. I am bored out of my skull right now because all my friends have exams tomorrow and they don't want to do anything because they have to study, and my first final isn't until Wednesday.
So I watched the Return of the Jedi and General Akbar says, "ITS A TRAP"
Forgive my internet ignorance, but I had no idea that meme was from that movie.
I laughed so hard.

Not all series rely on the retarded faces, though. There aren't any in Stand Alone Complex, for one. We're once again trying to talk about anime as a genre when it isn't.
There are barely any emotions in Stand-Alone Complex.
GitS is a (comparatively) serious, high-minded series and I applaud it, but people still wax discursive at length about their inner lives - "here is what I am thinking right now" - rather than displaying it through gesture, nuance, or allusion (which, granted, can be hard work in animation).
Anime is still, at all levels, a commercial enterprise representing huge investments of time and money, so it's always going to lie within a certain distance of a thematic and stylistic mean. I think manga is a better place to find adult storytelling, because being cheaper to produce it supports a wider variety of stuff - no one will ever mistake Hotel Harbour View for a Rumiko Takahashi book.

Yes, it is true.
Fuzzy did not know this thing.
Also, was there always a cut to the different cities at the end, and then certain dead people including a certain dead evil person appearing at the end?
I don't remember that in the original.

People take movies like Pirates waaaay too seriously.
Like, people always bitch about the last two Matrix movies, but I thought they were enjoyable as long as you weren't there for the meaning of life or whatever.

The MUD I played was Waterdeep.
That was a permanent gift from Cardboard Tube.
It will never leave there.

I thought the Matrix sequels failed as fun action movies. They were so horribly put together - a half hour long fight scene, no matter how cool, is about twenty minutes too long.

I disagree. Not about the Matrix, but some fights are epic enough to make up for an unconventional length.

Yep.
Hugo Weaving was the best part of all 3 movies. Also, Monica Bellucci FTW.

I guess we have different standards then. I really liked the chase scene in Reloaded.
Actually, I have really low standards for action movies in general. I'm pretty easy to entertain.

Not art film pretentious esoteria good, just a fun pirate movie good.
Screw pretentious, fun pirate movie is all that I ask!
