I just got to play Rock Band at a friend's house, and that was the tipping point that convinced me it's finally time to get a 360. I kind of want to wait until I can get some kind of discount or deal, though, so I was wondering if anybody more wise on the gaming retail news scene knew of anything?
I just ordered a refurb 360 with hdmi for 199 from ebgames.com. It's being delivered tommorow. To save even more money I got a 64mb memory card used off amazon for 12 and a hdmi cable for 7. Also I signed up for gamefly's 2 at a time for 22/month and got Halo 3 and Skate. If the 360 breaks down i just send it in to microsoft and they will fix it for free.
The ebgames thing may or may not be available right now but check back there every few days or so.

If you get the 360 Pro right now, there's like a holiday bundle where it comes with Forza 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance, all for $350 still. Not too bad, those are both solid games

I saw that on Amazon, but I'm not really interested in either of those games.

Microsoft will replace refurbs? Didn't know that. I thought if you got one of those and you got the red ring of death you were SOL. Good to know.

From what I read before I decided to make the purchase Microsoft WILL replace a refurb if it gets the RROD....shit, you know they want you to spend as much as you can on games/movies/DLC from live and that requires a working console...

I'm a sucker for DLC, which is definitely one of the contributing factors... I still need to play Symphony of the Night, for example.

Oh man just wait until you reach the inverted castle. Also dont pick up the crissagram if you come across it - it's completley overpowered and ruins the game.
I'm in the same boat as the OP. Interested in getting a 360 but hesitant. I really don't want to feel like I've shelled out the cash for a pro when I could have done something differently and gotten the same functionality for less.
There is one right now on Amazon for the core "arcade" system for $279.99 ($254.99 w/ Best Value savings) and you get Viva Pinata: Party Animals and Beautiful Katamari for free.
I would not buy a refurbed 360 without trying it first, the early units are just too unreliable hardware wise. Sure you got the 3 year RRoD warranty but that doesn't help you should the DVD drive decide to scratch disks (or stop working at all). Besides the newer 360s don't sound like a jet engine, produce less heat, and (probably) have less chance of RRoD. (while it is a free repair it does take time and is a hassle)
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Which is actually a really, really good deal. I own and like BK, but understand it's not everyone's cup of tea. Still, you could get the package and sell off the two games on eBay/trade in toward a used 20GB hard drive.
I thought the 20GB HDD dropped to $50 recently...?
That's only a clearance deal at Toys R Us, not a universal price drop. Still, you can find used HDs on eBay for roughly $50-$60, which is what I did when I bought my Core last summer.
Also, OP: Your best bet is to keep an eye on CAG (cheapassgamer.com). They'll always alert you on great deals.
Dell has one of the better bundle deals that I've seen in Canada (albeit, Canadian deals, maybe not so helpful to you...) if you're looking to buy new. 360 Premium with HDMI, Forza 2, Marvel: UA and Halo 3 for $399

I think any new 360 you buy these days comes with the Forza/Marvel combo. I recently got my 360 replaced by Gamestop (had bought back in February when they still replaced 360s) and got the two games in the new unit I got in addition to HDMI and $50 back cause I paid $399 for mine and it's $350 now. I already played Marvel on PC and I am utter balls at driving sims so I traded them in to Gamestop. I want to say I got like $30-$40 for it cause I didn't unwrap it (both games come in a single pack)
Also, if you go for the Amazon deal today, and if you have a Kmart near you, you might get lucky. They have on clearance the 20GB drive for $25. You'll have to be pretty lucky to find one in stock though.
