What satnav do I buy my dad?

I have little to no knowledge of satnav systems, I have used ones built into cars (not that I drive, but for other people) but my Mum has asked me to find out what the best one to get my dad for Christmas is.

Criteria -
Simple to use (he is not very technically minded at all)
Not powered by a cigarette lighter (his car doesn't have one, bottom of the end, 8 year old Nissan Micra...)
Covers all of UK, Europe would be nice but not required

on a budget of around £150.

Here's the rub - It has to be sold by John Lewis. My mum has £100 of John Lewis vouchers that she want's use for the satnav (hense the more expensive gift than normal), it's also the first time my Dad has ever known what he wants for Christmas (he normally just says 'Slippers') so she wants a good one, can be a little over John Lewis.

Don't really look at the John Lewis prices though, just the range, for most models you can buy them cheaper elsewhere, but JL pricematch, so we can get it down.

Thanks.

Bah. No Garmin? That would be the ideal choice. Does he want the voice? Or do you think just having the map is good enough?

I've read great things about the Tom Tom units. A quick check of the John Lewis site shows two in your price range.

As far as using them I don't know. I have only read articles about them. I still prefer maps and my sense of direction.

Looking through a few of those I think this one is the best option.

It has the voice over speakers, 5 hour battery life, and pretty simple interface. Perfect for the parents. Are you going to be driving more than 5 hours in a trip? I'm not sure how often you travel in the car. If so, I could search around some more and see if I can find one with more than 5 hours.

I'd recommend the Magellan 2200, if you can find one. It's what I got for my parents, and is incredibly simple (they're both techno-tarded), has a decent battery life, and has a great HUD as well as a vocal output.
