So Microsoft's marketing department has succeeded in totally confusing me about what the 360 actually does in terms of letting me view my media. I was planning to get a 360 soon, and was planning to get the elite so that I could put all of my music and video files on the large hard drive and watch my stuff on my nice TV instead of my computer screen. However, reading more into it, it seems that this is only possible to do with the content streaming, and even then only when I have a Media Center edition of Windows. But then there's all this stuff that talks about being able to connect USB hard drives, and other sources seem to imply that there is a way to get my stuff onto the 360's own HD.
Basically, I wanted to know if anyone could just simplify what the deal is with 360 multimedia. Can I put certain DRM-free video files that I have acquired on my Xbox 360 hard drive? Or an external hard drive that is then hooked up to the console? Is a Media Center edition of Windows absolutely mandatory? Are there any unofficial workarounds that I could use to put stuff on there (that won't void my warranty or somesuch nonsense)?
- You CAN stream media from PC->360 by running WMP11 or any number of third party apps (You don't need any Media Center edition of windows).
- You CAN play media from an attached USB drive (this may vary by drive type, so not completely sure on this one)
- You CANNOT transfer any media to the 360's HD itself aside from directly ripping audio CDs.
There may be some more exceptions, but that's all I've been able to do in the 2ish weeks I've owned one. (The WMP11 streaming works really well though, FWIW)

Also, anything you buy (videos, tv shows) cannot be transferred to your computer or ipod or anything, so make sure if you buy a tv show you're cool with never watching it again once the 360 goes obsolete. (that came out more dick like than I wanted, but it still holds true)
