    In his school they share the grades equally, so everyone gets an averaged out 50%.

    the cutoff point for an A doesn't actually matter in any way, though

    it's not any easier to get 90% when that means getting an A than when it means getting a B, so in every meaningful way a high B on the one system is equal to a low A- on the other

    it's the scores themselves that matter, and letters are just thrown in to give you nice clean cutoff points to quickly judge how well you're doing

    All that shows up on a transcript is the letter grade though.

    Well it letter grade cuttoffs make a difference if GPA and class rank are calculated on the 4.0 scale.
