The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
My cousin has been getting into hip hop and rap lately, and since Christmas is coming up, I figured I would introduce her to some stuff other than Timbaland, 50 Cent, Kanye, etc. I was thinking along the lines of Blackilicious, but to be honest... I don't know many hip hop artists.
So, any suggestions? I want to keep the albums as clean as possible given the nature of my aunt.
Voice actor for hire. My time is free if your project is!
When I was a little kid, I always pretended I was the hero,' Skip said.
'Fuck yeah, me too. What little kid ever pretended to be part of the lynch-mob?'
anything involving MF DOOM, he almost never curses, fairly insightful, and has an album that is completely about Adult Swim so your cousin might like it for that reason.
I believe he worked with Danger Mouse to produce this album. Its called The mouse and the Mask.
The Deltron 3030 album? I don't think there's much (any?) swearing, plus it's a concept album about space and lasers and shit. His battle raps are about actual battles.
I had to battle a shadow in his black light form
He dazzled me, adding 3 points to his score
Engulfed my microphone with darkness, adding 3 more
The panel started to roar!
I had to find the core of his power
He stretched his text, causing me to black out
It took my DAT out
I couldn't back out
It took out the sound man; I'm taking a pounding
I bust out an a capella (drum loop stops) -- that's astounding!
Get him one of those mixes with a bunch of different artists. Get something that focuses on the early 90's and it'll be pretty clean as far as hip hop goes.
Dont get him a CD with all the words being censored though. I remember getting some of those for christmas one year when I was still young and it kinda bummed me out even though I liked the artists.

Tread Water and 3 is the Magic number are 2 of the greatest and cleanest hip hop songs ever. You can't listen to these songs without grinning and bobbing your head.
As my day went unexplained, time was finding nothing fun
As I walked along the sidewalk, I heard,
'Psst, excuse me, Plug One.'
From my Soul, De La that is, I hollered
'Yes, are you talking to me?'
'No alarm meant,' he said, 'Let me introduce myself.
I'm Mr Monkey.'
'Mr Monkey, I pledge you slap of five,
Now how does your problem meet?'
He said, 'My bananas are at their ripest, but they all
Stand at three feet. My swinging hand is bandaged up.
Could you help me with this chore?'
I brought him down to the Native shop
And bought him copies of the De La score
Which assisted well in his elevation
Now all bananas is at his grasp
He decided with this accomplished,
He would put me on to the path
He to my to live by the Inner Sound, y'all
Which would bring me health in showbiz
Then to use them, not abuse them
And then in the words that got me to 'em
And that is to tread water
I like the quasimoto albums and some of his instrumentals, but I wouldn't introduce his stuff to a kid just because it's the biggest endorsement of marijuana this side of Bob Marley.
If you're willing to go more interesting then anything go pick up K'naan's Dusty Foot Philosopher for her.
K'naan is a Somali-Canadian who raps about his old life in Somalia, and does it with pure awesome. It's not completely swear free but it's 100% more real then anything she'll find on the radio.
Maybe you should just buy songs on the web and make a mix CD? And While there are a lot of good options in this thread(And I am going to look up that somalian rapper after finals), Tread Water by De La takes the cake for best song so far.
...Just thinking about that song makes my day. Also, if you go with the mix, add in Blackalicious- Make You Feel That Way.
EDIT- And Common- I Used To Love H.E.R. and GZA- Animal Planet.
You know, I am just going to make a mix cd for myself.

Chemical Calisthenics is also very very good. And Blazing Arrow. And My Pen and Pad.
RJ-D2 tends to be fairly clean and also doesn't devolve to the all too common "bitches and hos" misogyny that tends to dominate mainstream hip-hop. Aesop Rock also has some good stuff that is clean. If you'd like, I can listen to some of the good underground hip-hop I have and find good songs that aren't profane.
Gonna be honest, I love MF Doom (especially Madvillain) but I doubt it would appeal to an 11 year old. Common, Jurassic 5 and Deltron 3030 are better. The production is more poppy and easy on the ears. Blackalicious also has lots of interesting stuff. RJD2 is only tangentially hip-hop, he's more of a producer/dj but he's also awesome. Aesop Rock is far and above my favorite artist but sadly I think he might get lost on a kid. Labor Days should be held in reserve as your secret weapon.
My list of albums to check out:
Jurassic 5 - Power In Numbers (this is the album that got me into underground hip-hop)
Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow
Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030
Common - Be
RJD2 - Dead Ringer
De La Soul are critical reading for any hip hop/rap fan. Their style is still fresh today (at least, their older stuff is, ironically) and only the most blinkered one-dimensional hip hop 'fan' (ie someone who's only ever listened to Eminem and Crazy Town and now considers themself a hiphop fan) could say anything other than kind words about them. Influential, imitated, respected and clean.
Or MC Solar, because he's French so who knows what he's saying?
To be honest, if she's already listening to 50 Cent (unedited I assume?) she's probably already been exposed to a wide variety of unsavory themes. I didn't realize your cousin was a girl. Would she be interested in female rappers?
For those you might try to find:
Macromantics - Moments In Movement
Ang13 - The Balance
I have quite a few songs featuring Jean Grae but I haven't listened to any of her albums specifically. Also you could try to sneak some R&B in there with Mary J. Blige. She has quite a few songs you could comfortably include on a mix CD.

Clean and life affirming- also she won't see it as fogey music because he is current.

I believe he worked with Danger Mouse to produce this album. Its called The mouse and the Mask.
For Common, I'd see if you can sneak a listen before you get a CD for her. I remember there being a skit that was a little inappropriate.
Lupe has a new album coming out next week, but it's supposed to be more dark, so I'd suggest Food & Liquor as well.

ps. Deltron does have a little bit of swearing in FYI (though it is awesome).

Don't know how appropriate they are, but at least no curses.

MF DOOM definitely. Get DOOM and Madlibs collaboration as Madvillain "Madvillainy." Seriously one of the best hip-hop albums of this century.
Any k-os album. The most recent one is damn good - "Atlantis - Hymns for Disco."
Talib Kweli is always a solid choice, any GZA solo project is surprisingly free of cursing,

Print some nice covers or labels if you're in any way artistically inclined.
