The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
It has finally arrived, Forgotten Hope 2 is released to the public!
What is it? It is a Battlefield 2 total conversion set in good old World War 2. Forgotten Hope was one of the best BF1942 mods of the time featuring complete reskins and remodels of accurate vehicles, weapons, maps, and soldiers. Realism and tactics are emphasized rather than the run and gun arcade gameplay of BF2.
Probably the best mod hands down for BF2 currently (IMO).
Minor complaints are that some of the rifle sounds a little dinky and that there are way too many obstructions around the artillery guns (although this might be to prevent shelling of enemy non-cap spawns)
I love that you can't run Battlefield 2 in widescreen. I'm assuming it's the same for Forgotten Hope? I just installed BF2, and I know 2142 hated Vista, so I'm hoping BF2 doesn't. Although, clicking the audio tab crashed the game.
Edit: Awesome. I tried loading a map, and it crashed the game. Sigh.
Edit 2: I just remember it's not exactly Vista that the two games have problems with, it's X-Fi. Double sigh.

My only complaint after screwing around in single player is that the the firearm sounds are weaaaaak. Then again, I used a fan soundpack for FH1, so maybe that was the norm.
Also, you can jump even when you don't have any stamina. I wish they would find a way to fix that. Goddamn bunny hoppers.

You can run Battlefield 2 (Including FH2) in widescreen and have sharp and crisp visuals by following few easy steps from Pajama_Man!
1.
In the BF2 or FH2 shortcut (not the *toolbox shortcut) add the following into the target command line with your respective wide screen resolution
+widescreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050
so your shortcut target command line should look like this...
2.
Download the Widescreen Fixer application (preferably v1.32)
Extract the fixer anywhere and run the executable. Set the game (Battlefield 2 1.41) and your aspect ratio (either 16:9 or 16:10).
Run the Widescreen Fixer apllication everytime before you launch a Battlefield 2 game and it'll fix the wonky field of views.
...And regarding Punkbuster checking, heres what the author of the program David Rudie had to say...
REGARDING PUNKBUSTER
I have been communicating with EA and EvenBalance over the use of this program. I've gotten responses from both that say this program is allowed on PunkBuster-enabled servers. It's not any kind of official announcement and the use of it is subject to change. In other words, this program is OK to use for now, but understand that you use this at your own risk. If anything changes regarding its usage, I will update here.
*note the FH2 toolbox app there might be some settings that enable widescreen but I don't know or found them.

I love you. I actually just uninstalled BF2 before I read this post. Oops. Time to re-install. Before, Punkbuster would kick your ass if you tried to run the game in widescreen.
Just realized I typed Frontlines instead of Forgotten Hope. God I hate Frontlines. I even told Frank Delise he and his game sucked in the open beta. That game made me angry and physically ill.

I can't play. I get punkbuster errors every time i join a server, failure to communicate. Fresh install, patched to 1.41, installed FH2. The only things I can think of is I was trying to run the widescreen fix(but it does the same thing when I disable everything to do with that), and the fact that I didn't install two BF2 maps because my disk is scratched up, and wouldn't. But FH2 doesn't even use those maps
Also installed the latest pb from the site, didn't help
I lurked occasionally. I betatested FH2 for a bit but got too busy with other stuff.
Fun fact: the skins for the hands in the game are my hands.
Hmmmm...
BTW here is a quick screenshot I took in widescreen for those whom may wonder what it looks like.
resize from 1680x1050. At 4xAA on a x850xt it runs smooth!
The models in this game are incredible. Props to the modeler and skinner. Although the iron sights could be a little higher res no...
Man this mod is great! It's realistic to the point that it doesn't hinder the fun factor of the game at all.
I'd put it up there with Red Orchestra as probably the best realistic online WWII shooter out there now. And on the plus side both games take place in different theaters of war so there is no excuse to not play both of them.
One of the most polished mods out there. If only there was a modern day shooter with the same features and amount of certain realism without sacrificing all the fun.
I can't wait for them to add the other theaters. I loved playing Orel in FH and just hiding in a building with a bazooka, waiting to launch a rocket into a careless King Tiger's commander cuppola.
As it is now, I have to make due with a Boys AT rifle. It's nice that it doesn't take it forever to chamber a new round anymore, but it still does piss poor damage against anything stronger than a Sdkfz 222

Man, this utterly fell off the map. At least as far as the number of people rabidly excited for it vs. the number of people actually talking about it afterwards.
It's got a couple hundred servers, so if that counts as bombing then yes, it bombed. However, I would asy that it's doing pretty well.
And IMHO it's awesome. I never played FH (my computer was too crappy for BF1942 when it came out) so this is all new for me, and boy, it's tons of fun. My biggest worry was that it would be a whole lot of boring walking over sand dunes in between dying, but there are plenty of vehicles for the team that's on the offense and as a defender things are so frantic that there's not a lot of sitting around (unless the other team sucks). Nothing is as awesome as sitting in a trench with a 2 pounder firing at enemy tanks advancing over the dunes while Stukas divebomb you and your planes strafe the enemy. Also, riding on the side of a tank through a city only to jump off and run for cover when the machinegun tracers start flying towards you is great. The concussed effect for being near explosions or nearly getting hit by machinegun fire is awesome, and the actual infantry combat is pretty good (BF2 quality basically, only a little more lethal since bolt action rifles kill in one hit). It's overall very intense.
And it's pretty bug free too. There's some weird animations when you move an AT gun but I guess that's unavoidable, and otherwise it's like a freaking retail game. The graphics are mostly great too. Being a tail gunner in a Stuka is almost as fun as being a flak gunner shooting them down. I can't wait for them to add even more stuff; the Africa setting is nice and all but it's not my favorite.

Ah. Excellent.
I'll actually be able to get in on this one. I loved the original FH, but my PC's built-in sound tended to fuck with my connection, and the bots were retarded.
Holy crap sniper rifles are hard to use. It's so difficult to judge the bullet drop with it at long range.
Maybe at super long range, but at "slightly longer range than the normal bolt actions work" ranges, I'm totally killing people. The only problem is that I have no idea where the sniper kit spawns so I just track down enemy snipers and kill them instead. Cue 5 minutes of frantically hiding from tanks in craters while taking the occasional sniper shot.

I usually find it next to the commander table or in one of the buildings in your main base.
Has a load of annoying bugs, is laggy as hell and they've attempted to make it 'realistic' but have lost the instant accessibility that you got with something like 1942. They've added 'cute' little features that detract from the main game (and from the enjoyment).
I don't want to sit waiting on the runway while my engine spools up and the canopy to close. Some people will argue that this is more realistic - it's more of pseudo-realism - increasing the take off time doesn't mean an increase in realism. Its the same people that think by increasing the deviation value on a sniper rifle instantly means it's more realistic. And to be perfectly honest, if I wanted realism, I'd play OFP, BattleGround Europe, IL2 and the numerous other games that do it so much better.
Another example are the tanks, you need to go into the gun sight before you can fire - yet you can still drive around. It's stuck in the middle of being realistic and being open to instant play.
The bugs that you get in BF2 are still here in FH2 - I was laid behind a fence which was basically like this; |
|
|; fence posts with a single crossbar plank of wood going through; on the other side was a Sherman. I had the German Anti-tank rifle, and no matter where I shot, be it below or above the crossbar it would not register a hit - even the tank couldn't shoot me, his HE shells could not get past this awesomely super strong fence.
It runs worse than the vanilla game (and that ran badly), no doubt people will say 'Oh its because it has more detail blah blah blah', that may be the case, but it doesn't have that much more detail that I can't run it well with everything on Low or Off when I could have everything on Medium / High in the vanilla BF2.
Yes, it's a first release, yes it will get improved on - but it's taken 2+ years, the finished product does not reflect this insane amount of dev time. I could be more forgiving if it was released a year and a half ago, but there are mods out there that are more polished and did not take as long (PR for example). 'Fraid it doesn't float my boat at all - was really looking forward to getting some WWII action again - oh well, guess I'll re-sub to BGE.
Difference between Project Reality and FH2 is basically the difference between FH1 and FH2. The vanilla game was set in the same time period, used the same weapons and vehicles, and had the same combat. FH2 had to convert everything from modern combat to WWII, and the team didn't have the option of borrowing models while they played around with the values. It takes awhile to pull of a TC.

Man, I love having to use the actual main gun sights. Except on those damned Marmon-Herringtons.
The one-person-does-everything from an unconstrained viewpoint with a floating crosshair bugged the fuck out of me through the whole damned series. Hell, I blame BF 1942 for the general dumbening-down of vehicle combat.
That said, it does need a helluva lot of work. Not just in performance and general balance issues, but the freaking maps.
