Will that allow me to connect the sub woofer directly to the SPDIF connection in the back of my tv?
And if so does that work for anything connected to my tv (360, DVD player, Wii, etc..)
It's probably because his reciever is integrated into his subwoofer, the small object that you're confusing for a reciever is actually just a "display unit", whatever that means. Admittedly that is a rather bizarre design decision, but then again it's a pretty bizarre surround sound solution.
Anyway before we can get down to business; do you recieve your T.V. channels through an antenna or through some sort of set top box (cable or satelite)? If you go directly through an antenna then you're going to want to route your sound to the Reciever/Subwoofer through simple Red and White RCA cables from the Audio Out jacks on your T.V. and into the Red and White RCA Inputs on your Reciever/Subwoofer. You'll only get Stereo but unfortunately that's the best you'll get out of an antenna. With a set top box you can use either that fiber optic cable you've linked or a digital coaxal cable (basically just an RCA cable) from the set top box (if you use a digital coaxal the output will look just like an RCA out but it will be orange) to one of the Digital Inputs on your Reciever/Subwoofer, then simply go into the menu on your set top box and enable Digital Audio or 5.1 Surround that should get you surround sound for the shows that support it.
