Can we just say the iPhone and be done? Windows Vista being released should be up there at the top as well, not because it was a success, but because of how big a failure it was and still is. I think the iPhone blows everything else out of the water and does not leave much else to be discussed.

What the hell is it with everyone and the iPhone?

It didn't DO anything. It is pretty, and it is popular, but there is nothing SIGNIFICANT about it.

Yeah, as far as I'm concerned the iphone did nothing new. Plenty of other phones had internet access and mp3 capability. Wooo.. now you can touch the screen..

this is sort of taboo to talk about, but what the hell

One of the sonic hacking sites I visit frequently will compile their games as actual genesis binaries that you can burn to eeproms and run on your genesis. There was one guy who claimed he had found a beta copy of Sonic 1 and was doing some digging around in it and found a huge discovery, and posted the binary for people to try.

So I burned it to my flash cart, and popped it into my genesis... rick rolled. The dude had written an entire genesis program which displayed an animated rick astley, and converted the song into actual Z80 synth to be played over the genesis sound chip.
    :^:

Yeah, that whole Rick Roll thing, though I don't quite understand it, was everywhere. It even appeared on Family Guy if I remember properly.

The iPhone was definitely popular, and caught media attention because of its branding, but I do not see how simple popularity makes it at all a notable event.

But dude... It has an "i" before it, so clearly it's superior to everything else on the market. Bastards at Apple have seriously thought of everything.

Anecdotal stuff not related to topic at hand, but related to Apple
My parents wanted to buy my sister an iPod for Christmas. They asked me "how many megabytes they might need, if she listens to music." I told them to get a mp3 player that has 2-3 GB worth of space rather than an iPod. "What's the difference between an iPod and an mp3 player?" is the question that followed.

I told them the iPod had some shitty software that you had to install in order to get it working, so hopefully they spend LESS money to get a better mp3 player.

It's because it caught the attention of everyone and humanity went crazy over it. Yeah, I have been surfing the web on my phone for years but no one cares, but if I take out an iPhone people want to touch it and look at it and they all find it awesome. It might not be too fancy for people who hang out on websites like this but for a device to be so popular that my 80 year old granny even knows what it is then it's a huge deal. Rumor even has it now that the iPhone is going to be named Time's person of the year. Open Social or Android or whatever might be a big techie event but no one knows what any of that is.

Yeah, I'd have to agree. For a device that lacks native Outlook integration, I was surprised by how many people at my workplace was interested in the iPhone. As you can imagine, MS folks live and breath by their access to e-mail and Outlook calendars, and many of them (myself included) own WinMobile devices. So I was surprised by just how "catchy" and pervasive Apple's marketing had made the iPhone.

While not really on subject, Apple's marketing can suck a fat dick. Have you seen the latest "Hi, I'm a Mac. And I'm a PC" commercial? The christmas one? Literally the entire commercial is PC acting like a jackass saying how people should buy PCs and not Macs while Mac and Santa stand there looking sad. It literally says nothing about either system. Was the commercial sarcastic? Was Mac making fun of itself? The sheer amount of shit-smearing they do is fantastic.

If anything Apple should win for the biggest marketing asshole.

If they win anything legitimate, I'll be pissed.

For some reason that commercial reminds me of the PSP one. Where you have that annoying guy going around telling you how great the PSP is at every moment of everyday. Ugh..

Apple's marketing may be aggressive, but PC user advocates who are against Apple are the most extreme people ever.

I don't know. Maybe. Even so, all Mac advertising doesn't seem to be able to exist without bashing PCs. And I just don't stand for that kind of douchebaggery. It gives off the impression that they can't appeal to anyone without making the opposition look bad.

    That was hardly the point.

None of the Mac users I know (which exceeds at least 30 people included WoW guildmates and other internet folk) fit this profile of "elitist jerk" that extreme Apple haters tag them with. Complain about the commercial, that's gravy. But the users themselves? Pfft.

Also, I realize you did indeed only comment on the commercials. I just wanted to nip this shit in the bud.

Those commercials used to be funny and cute. However maybe it's just me (I am supposed to be biased after all, although I admit, if I didn't work here, I'd probably be typing this on MacBook sipping a chai latte), but the more these ads run, the more it just seems like the Mac guy is just ... too smug for his own good. Can commercials really "jump the shark"? Seems like Apple should quit while they're ahead and try something new. At this point, I wonder if they're pissing off PC users for making them look like idiots, than convincing them to switch to a Mac.

The only person I know who uses a Mac is an extreme 'elitist jerk'. His whole arguement about why Macs are better than PCs comes down to 'because I have a life' or 'because I have money.' Everytime I talk to him my face is stuck like this: O_o

I don't care either way about which is 'better'. They all have their purpose and I use Windows, Linux, and Mac equally. Or rather I would if I had a Mac.

Yes, the Mac marketing campaign is retarded and juvenile. Having said that, lets get back on topic. The iphone commercials aren't bad, though the latest one is kinda condescending (how did you ever live without it?). Still, it's nothing spectacular. Just good marketing. Should awards go out for good marketing?

    My nomination is still Rickroll!

For a serious nomination, I'm still with Facebook exploding in popularity.

For non-serious stuff, yeah either lolcats or RickRoll. Maybe we should have two categories then?

Yes Facebook has been around for a long time, but like many others, this is the year that everyone's been migrating over to it. I think everyone in my family has now got an account there (with absolutely no suggestion or mention from me). I was very surprised to hear my mum extolling the virtues of both Facebook and youtube this year.

My own last minute suggestion which I've just read about, which had better beat lolcats..

ignoring all the other responses, I'll say this, it's the marketing that makes us so nuts.

on the subject of those commercials, I find it funny how mac sells itself, first the represent themselves as non conformists, when in actuality it's their own stringent (read: fascist) regulations that allowed PC's and now LINUX of all things to beat them for market share on the home and business fronts respectively. on top of that think about which guy you'd rather do business with? the scruffy guy who looks like he's off his meds, or the guy in the suit, who's a little uptight, but probably at least somewhat reliable?

Honestly, the fact that people seem to be increasingly comfortable with using their real names online is a much bigger deal than the sites they use them on.

You weren't able to FIND people ten years ago.

Now companies can do obscenely-detailed background checks on new hires with a Google search.

MySpace has WAY too much crap all over the place. While Facebook is slowly turning that way with its endless apps and wall modifications, most MySpace pages start up abnoxious music, annoying colours, and generally tons of shit that makes you want to close the god damned window. When a MySpace page reminds you of something on YTMND, they are giving their users too much freedom.
