Consolidating Partitions in Windows Vista

Hey gang,

I recently got a new computer, and installed Vista on it. I wanted to create an OS/Application only partition, and then a larger partition for music, pictures, etc. So 100 gigs for OS/Apps, 400gigs for music, etc.

However, either I or the installer got it backwards, the primary partition is 400 gigs and the music, etc. partition is 100 gigs.

Fine, whatever, I just want to consolidate them into one and then maybe think about splitting them up later. However, I can't figure out how to do that. I've already deleted the 100 meg partition in hopes of being able to "extend" the primary one with the extra 100 gigs. But the options are greyed out in Vista's Computer Management->Storage->Disk Management.

Can I do such a thing, or am I stuck? I know Partition magic used to do this, cuz I've done it before.

I would recommend either partition magic or a reformat. Either will allow you to resize the disk sizes. A less drunk man may be able to walk you through it without a reformat, but I am not certain that it can be done.

Is there a version of partition magic that works with vista? I have looked high and low to no avail.

The one I use at work is Partition Magic 8. I use only XP at work, but run Vista at home. I am not sure it can be done, but if 8 can't do it then no man can.

Pfft, nuts to PM. I had a set of partitions that PM 8 would constantly error out on, but Acronis Disk Director got the job done with no hassles. As with most of the software Symantec is pushing out the door these days, PM is bloated and past its prime as far as I'm concerned, and ADD is the new champ for partition management. According to this checklist, it supports Vista as well.
