So...it's kinda like Super Mario Bros/Sonic except you're flying the whole time? Is that what I'm seeing? What's the main goal...to collect as many coins as possible?

    New review is up.

    http://wii.gamezone.com/gzreviews/r32203.htm

    the tl;dr version:
Nights: Journey of Dreams delivers a second dose of the classic, 2D meets 3D gameplay that made the original Nights a success. It has its share of flaws – the lack of innovation is surprising, and the motion controls are the worst of the bunch. But as a whole, Journey of Dreams is a great adventure that will take you to a world you won’t want to leave.

surprisingly, i'm sitting here understanding where most of these reviews are coming from. a 7-8, eh? so you mean it's fun, worth my time, great to look at, but has its share of minor flaws that wont ruin the game? awesome! the feeling i get is that had it had a smidge more polish, it would have inched the game towards the 8-9 range. sounds good enough for me.

    Wikipedia wrote:
Nights into Dreams is split into seven levels or "Dreams", each divided further into four "Mares" and a boss battle. At the start of each level, Wizeman's minions steal all the character's Ideya except the rare red type representing courage. The goal of each of the four "Mares" in each level is to recover the stolen Ideya by collecting 20 blue chips and delivering them to the Ideya capture, which will overload and release the orb it holds.

The Mares are linear courses that loop through the level. When you bring an Ideya back to the Ideya Palace at the start of a course, you'll start on the next one and keep going until you've collected all of the Ideya orbs. After that, it will send you to the level's boss battle.

Watching videos where people are playing for high scores can be a bit confusing if you've never played the game. Instead of blowing straight through the level, they'll collect the Ideya and then play the same course over and over until time almost runs out.

IGN says 6.5, but who listens to them anymore?
So after waiting over a decade for a new Nights experience, what's the final verdict? Personally, we'd rather have seen this one stay a nostalgic piece of gaming history, as Journey of Dreams isn't exactly the spectacular homecoming we were hoping for as huge fans of the original Saturn classic. The control is too stiff, odd design choices will have players repeating full levels rather than incorporating a simple checkpoint system which would have saved both progress and sanity alike, and there's a huge amount of emphasis put on non-Nights gameplay, having players control the human children in very unrewarding sections, and incorporating sloppy alternate gameplay rather than just focusing on what made the original so captivating in the first place. Nights still has its moments, as the style is there, the entire story is told with full VO (and some decent, if not a bit over-the-top voice acting throughout), and the boss battles specifically are pretty captivating. In the end it's simply a bit too rough all around, too short (less than three hours with each child will see the end), and strays from what made Nights so entertaining in the first place; the simple joy of flight.

My memory fails me but didn't you control the kids in the original too? I mean, I kinda remember that I had to be on the ground playing crappy and clunky parts and then *boom* I was flying around as NiGHTS. I actually think that was important in the way of contrasting the freedom of the dreamworld to being restrained on the ground.
Of course that if the on ground parts are too long that sucks

You were only required to control them for about 4 seconds at the beginning of a level unless you ran out of time while flying. Then you would be dumped on the ground and you would have to run around until you collected an Ideya to free NiGHTS with.

It's bullshit. 90% of the game is classic NiGHTS. The only difference is, unlike the original, now if you're on the ground you have stuff you can do in addition to the NiGHTS portion of the game.

I've damn near completed the entire game, save for a few drops. Tomorrow, I'm gonna write a full review.

I called it. IGN is fucking stupid.

EDIT: And, to clarify, you are not forced to play as the kids unless, like the original, you run out of time. Just like in the original, you begin each level almost right in front of NiGHTS.

I don't really think we needed any more confirmation of the ineptitude of IGN.

These guys gave God Hand 4.9, I don't understand why anyone with any intelligence would use an IGN review to help influence a purchasing decision.

Hmm, having to watch the story sequences over again after every death is really annoying in any game, and if this game is supposed to be about replaying a short arcadey experience over and over, then breaking up the action with lots of unskippable cutscenes seems especially unforgivable. Also, even if you only control the kids for 10% of the game (assuming you have TSR's level of Nights skill), that's still 10% of an already short game that isn't fun and as someone who's never played Nights before, I suspect that I'd be spending a lot more time on the ground than that. It sounds like there's a really good game in there in spite of those flaws, but I don't think I'll be picking this up just yet. I really need to sit back down with Zack and Wiki before I buy anything new, Mario Galaxy distracted me but now it's time to get back to puzle solving. This one is probably next on my list once Zack and Wiki is vanquished, though.

I don't know about the new game, but the original is pretty easy. They give you more than enough time to make it through a course without hitting the ground. You can either play it safe and fly straight back to the Ideya Palace or you can use the extra time to get a huge score for a better grade.

Also, has it been confirmed that the cutscenes are unskippable on future playthroughs yet?

(It will be nice owning a NiGHTS game that doesn't erase my save data because the battery went dead from leaving my Saturn unplugged for a year.)
