PSP! New 3.80FW adds Internet radio; w/ PS3, play PS1 discs remotely over Internet!

NOTE: Sidetalkin' not included in firmware update.
psp20phonerx3.jpg

A handful of posts from the Land of That Other Handheld: First, the newest firmware update (3.80) adds a few things but most notably adds streaming Internet radio capability. I'm still charging my PSP so I haven't checked it out, but apparently you can get two players, one of which is ShoutCast powered, and there are dozens of different stations, including some J-Pop, K-Pop and game-tune stations.
Changelog wrote:
* [Internet Radio] has been added as a feature under [Network]
* The importing of channels in OPML format is now supported under [RSS Channel]
* Photos can now be displayed under [RSS Channel]
* New effects have been added to the visual player under [Music]

Direct download link, or just do a System Update from the PSP menu.

Also, Kotaku is reporting that Sony is offering their first-party Media Manager software for free. It's a Japanese link but the program itself is in English once you've installed it. I'm assuming it's PC only, so I'll give it a whirl tonight. Not that putting files on your PSP is really all that hard yourself, but hey, free is free. Lemme know if it's any good!

Lastly (but certainly not leastly), as Radikal_Dreamer points out, if you also have a PS3, the new firmwares of both enable this ridiculously great feature: You can play PS1 games (either discs or downloadable versions) remotely over any Wi-Fi connection. This means that if you leave Vagrant Story, Einhander, Xenogears or any other PS1 in your PS3 at home, you can play it via your PSP at any Internet hotspot. That's right: Chrono Cross on the toilet.

Wow, internet radio. I never bothered putting MP3s on my PSP but this may give me a reason to port it around with a set of headphones.

If you like the games I say go for it -- the whole No Games meme has long since expired. Castlevania, Lumines, Wipeout Pure/Pulse, FFT: War of the Lions, DJ Max Portable 2 (a fave of mine), Killzone Liberation. I don't have as many PSP games as I do with my DS but it does a lot of things (namely high-end 3-D) amazingly well.

I also dig having a convergence device that does audio and video on the go. There's plenty of stuff available for the system, even while staying 100 percent legit.

I have to say the PSP has been worth getting for at least the last couple years, it has a bunch of great games but it's just a great system all together.

On the subject of the PSP, I recently upgraded my Mac, and I was using iPSP to convert video and move files from my Mac to the PSP, however I lost my key code and so far they have ignored all my emails to try and find out what it is!

So is there such a thing as good/free (or very cheap) PSP software for the Mac? I also have a Windows XP box I use for a lot of my encoding, so if there is a really good Windows converter (for free) I wouldn't mind that. I tried PSP Video 9 but it just broke and stopped working after it's 1st use and reinstalling won't fix it! I only use that PC remotely so I would like to be able to convert files without the PSP hooked up, then I could manually add them using my Mac.

    Cheers :)

If you don't have a PSP by now you're doing yourself a disservice. It's true that it had a sucky, sucky library earlier in its life, but now it's pretty much reached the point where unless you absolutely must play Brain age 2 you'll probably find games that you enjoy on it.

Hmm, please you are making me fall down. I haven't brought it myself, My own PSP but I am going to buy it this Christmas and looks like I have many things to look over. All those upgrades are nice to see abouts.

Internet radio? My interest it piqued. I just upgraded to a 2 GB card to enjoy that beats game and Silent Hill origins is GREAT.

Question, I would like to transfer the stuff from my old 256 mb card over to the new one... I have a PS3 with the card reader, can i use that?

Just use the USB cord that comes with the ps3 to transfer it to your computer.

Instead, just connect the PSP to your PC using a USB cable and backup the content.

Wait, you put it in your PS3 at home and than play it from anywhere like... over the intertube? Or do both of them need to be in the same WLAN? Would still be pretty cool I guess.

I'm getting a PSP for christmas from my wife. FFT and Disgea tipped me over.

Yep, over the internet. You can directly connect to the PS3 if you're in range, but that's kind of silly, as you'd just play on the PS3 instead. If you're at a wi-fi spot you can connect to your PS3, turn it on through the PSP, and play the PS1 game you have in your drive, and then even turn the PS3 off when you're done.

I would say now is a good time to take the plunge and get a PSP. My wife and I just got each other the Daxter bundle over the weekend, and we couldn't be happier. The game library is really nice now, lot's of SRPG's for me and platform games for her, and the media functionality of it is pretty slick.

I don't really have that many PS1 games anymore, but the appeal is immensely strong. I could see this pushing a lot of PS3 owners to pick up a PSP, although it's a harder sell in the other direction. Still -- freaking awesome.

Now, if they someone worked voodoo to get PS2 games playable remotely in the same manner, I would likely go buy a PS3 next week.

It wouldn't take much voodoo at all. The PS3 does all the processing and just sends the image to the PSP and receives the button presses from the PSP. LAIR, a PS3 game already works through remote play (though rather badly, since you can't do any of the motion stuff with the PSP...), so I'd say PS2 games are not even close to out of the question.

Right, it just wouldn't work with a lot of games. They do have an option that lets you use Select+analog for the other analog stick, and select+R for R2, and select+L for L2, though. For some games that'd be pretty impossible to play, but I'm sure there are some you could play just fine like this (mainly, RPGs would be fine, but faster paced shooters and stuff wouldn't)

Hmm. Now the question to ask is: When you're remote playing a PS1 game, and save, is it saved to the PSP, or saved to the PS3 so you can go home and continue?

Neat little setup. Can't say I'd use it outside of the initial novelty factor as I have so little PS1 games now that haven't either been remade or ported to other systems. However, I can see it being great for people who have high-def TV's that make their PS1 games look like shit.

Step one: use PSP to activate Poochey
Step two: use PSP to activate PStriple

Another nice feature would be the ability to run folding@home after you are done playing/transmitting PS1 games, aside from the option to turn your console off. (I mean locally on the PS3, there is no use to do these calculations on the PSP) ;)

How does this feature actually work? I mean, your PS3 needs to have a public adress which can be used to actually access it across the interweb.

Actually playing you own PS1 games is a pretty nice move from a company which isn't exactly known to make smart moves concerning their customer relationships.

It would be even better if you could transfer the whole game to your PSP (given that you have a memory stick which is big enough). The data could be stored in some kind of encrypted "container", so that the transfer and playback on/to other PSPs is not possible. Although this would still encourage pirating, or the circumvention of the protection.

So is anyone else having problems connecting their PSP to wireless? I've connected it in the past, but I haven't been able to in the past few weeks. When I tried to connect earlier today, before I updated, it just gave me an error message telling me to check my network settings. After updating, it just times out. Distance doesn't seem to be a factor and it is detecting the wireless network. I'm using WEP "security" and I've tried all 4 passes (which have worked in the past on my PSP and work on my 3 computers, laptop, PS3, 360, Wii and DS). So any advice?

I read that and instantly thought of some Square Enix execs, sitting in their board rooms throwing tantrums that now they can't port all their PS1 games to the PSP. It's not going to stop them porting Star Ocean 2, since they've already started development on it, but I wonder if it might hurt the rumoured Vagrant Story port or any others for that matter.

Anyway, awesome new feature, I've been contemplating replaying Suikoden II and this might force me to. I wish they'd put more third party games on the PS Store though, Suikoden 1 is god-damn expensive.
